Poetry Group
Has Program
On E. A. Poe
Edgar Allen Poe’s personality
and writings were the subject of
the program given by Dr. Carroll
Laverty Monday night at the reg
ular meeting of the Poetry Soci
ety.
The meeting was held at the
home of Miss Elizabeth Wood,
with Mrs. L. V. Hanna as co-hos
tess.
Laverty, who also served as cri
tic for the evening, was introduced
by Vic Lindley. He told the group
that a poem is a living thing which
changes and grows even after it
is finished. He illustrated his
idea by quoting verses from
Dante’s “Inferno” and Shakes
peare’s “Othello’ which, he said,
gave new meaning for him to
some of Poe’s works.
Laverty, who is a graduate of
the University of Colorado, wrote
his doctoral thesis on Poe.
The poems presented by society
members were judged by Laverty
as follows: first, “The Night
Winds’ Lullaby” by Mabel Clare
Thomas; second, “I Remember a
Day” by Eleanor Nance, and third,
“Year So Young” by Jerry Drum-
w right.
Refreshments were served at
the close of the meeting by the
hostesses from a table centered
with an arrangement of landina
and laurel leaves.
The next meeting will be on
March 10 at the home of Dr. and
Mrs. John Q. Anderson.
