By ROBERT WEEKLEY
The Texas Aggie baseball team, led by all-SWC third-
baseman Wendell Reed and catcher Gary Herrington, open
baseball practice Feb. 15 under veteran coach Beau Bell.
Bell begins his 8th season at A&M with a potentially
good pitching staff, nine returning lettermen and a sophomore
infield.
James Smotherman, senior letterman from Frisco, looms
as the team’s big bat from his position as outfielder and co
captain.
Last year as a junior Smotherman led the conference in
three categories; hits with 18, total bases of 33 and tied for
the lead in triples with 2. He batted .300 in league play, hit
■♦■two grand slammers and was
tied for second in doubles with
five.
Close behind the tall out
fielder will be all-SWC Reed.
In last years’ competition, the
hard-hitting third sacker posted a
.308 butting average, collecting
five doubles in 16 hits.
Herrington, a 5-11 junior from
Baytown, stands tall in his squatt
ing position of catcher. The all-
SWC player made only one miscue
on the diamond last year as a
sophomox-e for a fielding avei’age of
.991. He battad well above the .300
mark until the last three games
when he dropped to a respectful
.264.
Last season saw the Cadets wind
up with a 4-10 recoi’d and pos
session of last place. This year the
prospects look brighter with the
Farmers in the role of dark horse,
and that horse looks like he might
be another Swaps.
Bell feels that the Cadet pitching
staff will be a sound one if left
hander Toby Newton rounds into
the kind of form that made him
an all-confei-ence huider as a
sophomore two years ago.
In the bull pen waiting to lend
able assistance to Newton wlU be
two lettermen pitchers, Lefty “Bo”
Paradowski and x-ighthander Don
nie Hullum. Bell expects strong
mound help also fx-om sophomore
Percy Sanderson of Nederland, the
leading Fish huider a year ago,
and junior college transfer Marvin
Thompson.
Returning lettermen on the team
are Reed, Heridngton, Smothei’man,
Wayne Balke, Wayne Schaper,
Dickie Thomas, Newton, Hullum
and Paradowski.
Reed will leave third base to be
given a try in the outfield this
spring, Bell announced. That
means that the starting outfield
should be composed of Smother
man, Reed and Thomas, but J. B.
Carroll and Bill Clifford, up from
the Fish team are expected to
make a strong bid for those posi
tions.
Herrington has the inside track
for the catching spot although an
