Get Satellite Up
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (#>>—
The United States’ Explorer satel
lite is' 'whizzing in orbit about the
eayth at speeds from 15,400 to 18,-
500 miles an hour.

The closest the slender, 6%-foot
satellite is coming to the earth is
22Q miles and at times it soars 1,700
miles above. The nearer the earth,
the faster the speed.
That’s the calculation given yes
terday by Dr. Fred Eimer of the
Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Pasa
dena!, Calif.
He was doubly sure the satellite
was whirling in oi’bit about 20
minutes after firing. The satellite
then was somewhere near Africa.
A sound recording of commands
and comments inside the command
center blockhouse was played for
newsmen. This blockhouse is the
brain center for firing prepara
tions.
There were laughs, too. Robert
Moser of Daytona Beach, Fla.,
barked out commands to check va
rious phases of the missile and once
cried out when the missile was
just 45 seconds away from fh-ing
time: “Good Lord, Pm missing a
page. No I’m not.”
He explained yesterday that
when he was reading off the multi
page list of check points in the
hours-long countdown, he flipped
two pages instead of one and for
a split second things were con
fusing.
At another point a fellow work
er said: “Bob, hold it,” explaining
there might be valve trouble. But
there’ wasn’t and the counting was
resumed at x-minus 30 seconds.
Then came the dramatic 10 sec
onds before the order “firing com
mand” was given.
Moser ticked off: “10-9-8-7-6-5-4-
3-2-1-0.”
Then someone shouted: “Lift off!
It’s off! Look up!”

Young Killers Give
‘Not Guilty’Plea
LINCOLN, Neb., —(A 5 )—Charles
Starkweather, 19, admitted killer
of 11 persons, and his 14-year-old
girl friend, Caril Ann Fugate,
pleaded innocent yesterday to the
charges of first degree murder.
For Starkweather, the bandy
legged gunman whose acknowledg
ed victims include 10 in Nebraska
and one in Wyoming, a District
Court preliminary hearing was set
for March 1. Caril’s preliminary
hearing will be held a week later.
Neither defendant was repre
sented by counsel. Both answered
“not guilty” to identical complaints
charging them on two counts with
killing Robert Jensen, 17, Bennet,
Neb., high school junior.
One count charged murder with
premediated malice, the other, mur
der in perpetration of robbery—
the theft of Jensen’s automobile.

Huge Money Bill
To Aid Air Defense
WASHINGTON —<#*)— The Sen
ate speedily and overwhelmingly
passed a $1,410,000,000 emergency
money bill yesterday.
The measure, previously approv
ed by the House, carries $1,260,-
000,000 of new appropriations to
step up programs for ballistic mis
siles, nuclear submarines that can
launch missiles, detection systems
for both enemy aircraft and mis
siles, and additional bases for the
Strategic Air Command.

agers have problems, too, a Mos
cow radio commentator said to
night.
“Wonderful as the educational
system is in the Soviet Union the
schools do not find it an easy job
to cope with some of the emotional
problems that crop up among teen
agers,” he said in an English-
language broadcast.
“In the Soviet Union the schools
are coeducational and some of the
girls tend to get somewhat roman
tic in the senior forms—girls and
boys between 16 and 18.”
“The teen-agers want to know
hpw a first date is made, how to
be one of the crowd that go around
in couples. What can a boy and
girl find to talk about for an en
tire evening—perhaps how kissing
fits into the picture.”
