In Class “A” football action
r esterday, the Maroon Band com-
lined a strong running and passing
ittack with a stubborn defense to
lefeat “C” Engineers, 20- 6.
Maroon Band struck first on an
8-yard run by Bob Jones. Tom
hpp added the extra point to give
us team a 7-0 margin.
This lead was narrowed considcr-
bly, however, as Jim Van Cleave
f “C” Engineers took the ensuing
ickoff three yards deep in his own
nd-zone and ran it back the en-
ire length of the field for the
ouchdown.
But Maroon Band wasted no
ime in padding their lead. They
larched back up the field and
inally hit paydirt on a 10-yard
ass from Howard Grantham to
'at Craddock.
Grantham also passed for the
winners’ last TD. Bob Jones also
had a hand in this one as he was on
the receiving end of the aerial that
covered 10 yards. Willett Stall-
worth passed to Ralph Peterson
for the extra point.
“C” FA defeated “E” Infantry
by the mere margin of penetrations
as the two teams fought to a 6-6
deadlock.
Both teams scored through the
air. J. E. Spencer passed to David
Cox for the “C” FA TD. “E” In
fantry scored on a pass from Julian
(Lefty) Beckman to Alex Mc-
Ilheran.
In the other class “A” game,
“B” Infantry squeezed by “A” FA
by a score of 6-0.
In the only class “C” game,
Mitchell and Milner battled to a 13-
13 tie.

The sound everyone heard late
Monday afternoon was the nation’s
“available” football coaches
stampeding toward a good hiding
place—far away from Texas A&M.
Owls Indignant,
Need Coach, Too
Angry Rice students, remember
ing- Baylor’s football flop last
season, reacted Monday night to
the Owl’s humiliating loss to Tex
as Christian University by hang
ing three effigies of their basket
ball coach Don Suman from trees
on the Rice campus.
The Horned Frogs plastered the
feathered ones by a degrading 92-
68 score, which prompted the stu
dents to string up the images from
trees around Fondren Library.
There was also a sign hanging
on one of the dummies stating
“We want a coach.”
With the situation being as it
is, Rice* should know they aren’t
the only ones.

And nmv, the deathly silence you
can’t help but notice is emanating
from these same various and
sundry remaining mentors, who
have the same tendencies for the
Texas A&M coaching job as jack-
rabbits have for hungry coyotes.
The Athletic Council, w T ho has
received more maltreatment than a
butchering steer in a packing
house, are once again delegated to
their continuous task of finding
someone to fill the massive brogans
vacated by Paul Bryant.
The dissolving oC the Athletic
Committee might prove a tasty bait
to some “slightly - interested”
coaches, but it is going to take a
lot more than that to do the fina 1
job.
Dr. Chris Groneman, chairman of
the Athletic Council, who has done
a fabulous job—considering the op
position he has been up against
informed The Battalion that the
selection group would try to meet
sometime today to try to “piece
things together” and organize an
other posse.
Groneman, the Frank Buck of
the Athletic Council, announced
that the Faculty committee would
“start from scratch and consider
every possibility” — which must
mean “big name” coaches, and
others as well.
Their recommendation will now
be directed to the President of the
College, M. T. Harrington, instead
of going through the now defunct
Athletic Committee of the Board of
Directors.
There are not any names on the
recommendation list as of today,
but a list should be forthcoming
before too long.
Although our chances of finding
a coach have been compared to
those of a man fishing for trout in
the Shamrock swimming pool, the
Athletic Council has a lot of desire
and interest—which is a lot more
than has been displayed by some
groups in the past few miserable
days.
Former Aggie Aide
Takes Prep Post
O. A. (Bum) Phillips, former as
sistant coach for Coach Paul
(Bear) Bryant and previously with
Nederland High School, announced
his acceptance of the head coach
ing-athletic director job at Jack
sonville Tuesday.
Phillips, who served one year
with the Aggies under Bi’yant, will
replace Coach James O’Dell, who
asked to be reassigned in the school
system after last season.

Mercer
Leads Scoring
By ROBERT WEEKLEY
Flashy Don Mercer, star of the
Tuesday night 70-71 loss to the
Baylor Cubs, took over the Fish
scoring lead on the strength of
his showing in the last game.
Mercer, a 6-2 guard from Long
view, was far and away the game’s
leading performer in the heart-
breaker. He hit from all angles for
28 points and played a standout
floor game.
It was the 18-year-old hustler
who received a stolen ball from
Dale Ethridge, raced down the
court and scored a field goal in the
closing minutes of the game to
make the score 63-64, Baylor.
Fouled while making the shot, he
stood confidently at the free toss
line and sank the one point that
tied the game and sent it into
overtime.
At the start of the season, Fish
Coach John Dewitt said that “the
youngster was a player who could
help the varsity now.” After
Tuesday night’s exhibition he made
a believer out of the Baylor squad.
A pre-dental major, Mercer came
Don Mercer
Leading Fish scorer with an
average of 14.2 points in 5
games.

to A&M on a half scholarship. In
high school he was named on the
All-District team two years in a
row and made honorable mention
on the All-State team. He has
made the All-Tournament team in
every tournament he has played in.
An exceptionally accurate shoot
er, his favorite shot is a jump one,
about fifteen feet out from the
basket, that he rarely misses.
On defehse he assumes a stance
that looks like a hungry dog wait
ing for a bone. That’s the kind of
player he is. He presses the man
he is guarding so close that the
opponent often miscues.
