Myers Withdraws In Surprise Move
Navy’s Erdelatz Sudden Favorite; Visits Ai&M
By GARY ROLLINS
As fickle as a 13-year-old girl
at her first formal dance, the
Texas A&M Board of Directors
suddenly directed—or misdirect
ed—their efforts to obtain a head
coach and athletic director yester
day afternoon.
In a rapid move, shortly after
one o’clock Monday, it was an
nounced that Iowa State’s Jim
Myers had asked that his name be
withdrawn from consideration.
Even while the three-hour meet
ing was in progress, Navy’s Eddie
Erdelatz was winging the way
southward with three of his as
sistant coaches to meet with Texas
A&M officials and “view the cam
pus.”—which might suggest the
Iowa State coach never had a
chance at the job he wanted.

Wayne Lawrence and Neil Swisher are shown in the pro
cess of stealing- a rebound from an unidentified Rice Owl.
There weren’t quite enough rebounds—or points, either—
for Rice won a close one 62-59.

Coach Eddie Erdelatz, of Navy
football fame, asked at noon to
day that, his name be dropped
from consideration for the coach
ing vacancy at Texas A&M. An
Athletic Council meeting was
called off this mornirig when
Erdelatz indicated he would not
meet with Texas A&M officials.

It was common knowledge that
Jim Myers was by far the choice
for the position—the Athletic
Council recommended him heartily,
but the sudden turn of events sug
gested the quest for a big name
had suddenly over-ruled his bid.
This “never-ending” search for
a “big name” has suddenly settled
on the Middies’ Erdelatz, a very
successful and likeable man whose
hist six squads have possessed the
"winning hatttt—losing but 11
games total.
In connection with financial af
fairs, he said he had not been ap-

preached by the school with any
salary offers or contract offers,
but should he be offered the job,
the money angle would not enter
into it. “If I had wanted more
money, I could have accepted a
job coaching in professional foot
ball several years ago,” he said.
It is interesting to note that
Erdelatz has made it a profession
al habit to coach at all-male in
situations. When asked if he pre
ferred a co-educational school, he
said “Absolutely not.”
Furthermore, he suggested his
recruiting might not be up to par
with rival coaches, but he silenced
further comment.
A meeting of the Athletic Coun
cil was tentatively scheduled for
this morning at 10, but whether or
not it would come off as planned
was debatable. Time and time
again, it has been emphasized that
Eddie Erdelatz is merely visiting
the school, just as former pros
pective coaches have.
And time and time again, the
implication has leaked out that
the time for action is now—before
it is too late. In some Southwest
Conference schools, spring training
is less than a month away.
Owls Win In Overtime,
Ags Test Bears Tonight
With 1 victory so close, but yet so
far, the Texas Aggies fought the
highly-ranked Rice Owls through
an overtime battle before gamely
bowing 62-59.
Once again it was soph Wayne
Lawrence who paved the way for
the Cadets with 18 points. Rice’s
Dale Ball was high man for the
game with 19.
With 40 seconds remaining in
the extra period, Rice guard Gary
Griffin drove half the court to
sink a layup that settled the issue,
giving Rice a 60-59 advantage. A
last-gasp foul by Lawrence broke
up the Owls freeze, but Dale Ball
sunk the two charity tosses to
widen the gap.
The Rice Owlets made it a clean
sweep for the Houston school in
the semi-final game by tripping
the Fish, 45-40. Malcolm Lawler
was high production man for John
DeWitt’s crew with 12 points.
The Cadets journey tonight to
Waco, to once again meet the Bay
lor Bears in their quest for a
conference victory. In the South
west Conference tourney, Coach
Bob Rogers’ Aggies outraced the
Bruins 80-63.
The Fish and Cubs tangle at 6:15
in a preliminary game.
KICE (62)
Erdelatz said that he would re
main at Aggieland overnight and
did not know when he would re
turn to Annapolis. He also said he
was in a position to accept an of
fer if it should be made during his
visit here.
