Jim Myers Moves Closer To Aggie Job State Defers Pay Raise As Myers Leans To A&M By GARY ROLLINS With a smile on his face and a tongue in his cheek, Iowa State’s Jim Myers remained silent on the possibility of his being announced Texas A&M’s head coach and athletic direc tor next Monday. In fact, he went so far as to say “I have nothing to tell anybody about anything.” However, as the dark warning clouds spread over the campus at Ames, Iowa the Iowa State Board of Regents de ferred action on the proposed pay boost which was to be tendered Myers. When the promising young coach returned from, inter views at Arkansas concerning the head coaching job there, Iowa State was so elated at his choice to remain in the Hawkeye state they voluntari ly boosted his pay by $2,000. The decision to defer action on a pay boost for Myers, as well as for his assistants was made on recommendation of Dr. James H. Hilton, Iowa State College presi dent. Myers’ assistants were scheduled for increases ranging from $250 to $750. However, if Myers comes to Aggieland, he is expected to bring his coaching staff with him. Myers expressed belief earlier in the week that he would be recommended for the job next Monday, and went so far as to name his coaching staff—which is to include J. T. King and Wil lie Zapalac, both assistants from the former regime. The only dark spot in the picture lies in a meeting of the Iowa State College Athletic Council, which is planning a full meeting Saturday. The Texas A&M Board of Direc tors will not convene until Moh- day, and it is not beyond imagina tion that A&M will have their pros pective coach snatched “from un der their noses” once again. However, the deferment of My ers’ bonus is indicative of a po tential release of the Cyclone coach. Nonetheless, both schools are kept waiting for the announce ment — which is getting to be a habit at Texas A&M.
