BY ROBERT WEEKLEY Sports Staff "The Aggie Fish open their 1957-58 basketball season against the Allen Academy Ramblers tonight at 8 in the Allen Academy Gym. The Fish face a not-so-bright future this year because of a lack of height that is so necessary to dominate the court, both offensively and defensively. Malcom Lawler, 6-4 national high school All-American from East Delta, will lead the Fish quintet into the fray. An outstanding athlete in high school, Lawler averaged 32 points per game last year as a high school eager. Lawler, recovering from a sprained ankle received in a workout earlier this year, is called a “good shooter” and a “tremendous rebounder” by* Freshman Coach John Dewitt. Steve Van Winkle will lend vital height to the team with his 6-41/2 frame. Van Winkle, the nearest thing to a finished product on the team, is a court- wise and aggressive player who fol lows the ball well. DeWitt de scribes him as a player with “great potential.” Red-headed Dale Ethridge, who packs 200-pounds in his 6-4 frame, shows great promise as being one of the big guns on the Fish five this year. Chosen on the mythical all-regional team during high school, Ethridge hails from Ropes- ville. Don Mercer, one of the “little” men on the squad, stands low at 6-1 tk. Mercer made his All-Dis trict team two years in a row. Described as quick and accurate, he will be a constant threat to the opposing team as a ball-hawk and fast break man. Elliot Craig, the smallest man on the starting five, stands at an even 6-0. Playing opposite Mercer, Craig is the same type of player, quick and accurate. During his high school years, he made the AAA All-State team and played on the Texas North-South basket ball game. The probable starting line-up for tonight’s game will be Craig at guard, Ethridge at forward, Mer cer at guard, Van Winkle at for ward and Lawler in the post posi tion. Expected to give reserve depth to the team are Joe Thompson, 6-1 -AAA all-stater from Bryan; Dick ijkerson, 6-4 player from Bryan; JJen ry Kitzman, 6-footer from I'ejtson. [hg Allen Ramblers will prove ►be worthy opponents for the sh, although they have already dropped two games this season. They boast a team that has both depth and experience; experience being something that the Fish are unable to achieve each year. Last year the Fish posted a 4-7 record, their first defeat of the year being to the Ramblers by a score of 62-58. The Fish this year are not very big, but they are a lot faster and show more hustle than their pre decessors. Their fault now, ac cording to DeWitt, is learning how to be “more aggressive.” The 1957-58 Freshman Basket ball Schedule Dec. 12 Allen Academy in Bryan Jan. 4 TCU at Fort Worth Jan. 7 Texas at College Station Jan. 10 Rice at College Station Jan. 14 Baylor at Waco Feb. 1 Wharton Junior Col lege at College Station Feb. 4 Houston at College Station Feb. 7 Baylor at College Station Feb. 11 Rice at Houston Feb. 15 Texas at Austin Feb. 22 Allen Academy at College Station Mar. 4 TCU at College Station Tankers To Host Conference Meet On Saturday, December 21, at 2:30, the Texas Aggies will act as hosts for the Southwest Confer ence Swimming Relays.
