■ Amid many rumors of specula-y
tion. Coach Duffy Daugherty of
Michigan State announced he would
reveal his decision on whether or
not he would take the coaching job
on his arrival at his home in East
Lansing, Mich, sometime this even
ing.
This was not an encouraging
statement, however, for the first
time, as Daugherty took the initia
tive to make a statement he pre
viously stated would be made by
Texas A&M officials.
Daugherty, who has been offered
the identical athletic director-head
coaching job which Coach Paul
Bryant recently vacated, for a
similar post at Alabama, had not
been signed to a contract as of last
night.
The Spartan coach, whose grid
team was ranked tops in the na
tion for four weeks of the past sea
son, made, the announcement as to
his status last night in Rochester,
N. Y. where he was making a
speech.
Daugherty conferred with A&M
officials Monday night in “general
terms” regarding the coaching
vacancy at Aggieland. He was
quoted as saying “We didn’t get
down to anything specific.” He
further stated “I’ve got the best
coaching job in the country—if
you’ve talking just about coaching.”
Daugherty does not have a con
tract at Michigan State, but he does
have a full professoi-ship.

Coach Bobby Rogers’ sharp-shooting Texas Aggies
scorched the cords with 50 per cent shooting Monday night
in Memphis, Tenn. as they downed highly-ranked Memphis
State University, 71-68. The Tigers were undefeated this
season, and were placed twentieth in this, week’s Associated
Press basketball poll.
It was guard Bob Johnson who provided the big effort
once again, as the junior from Pleasant Grove sunk field
goal and a free throw with 2:40 remaining in the contest.
Johnson was fouled as he drove for the basket.
The Aggies then gained possession of the ball and placed
it in “deepfreeze” for the final two minutes of play, with Neil
■♦'Swisher adding two insurance
points at the final buzzer.
It was the Tigers’ third de
feat in as many years on their
court.
Soph star Wayne Lawrence led
the Aggie scoring with 22, but
Archie Carroll, junior from Red
lands and Swisher also supported
the cause with 16.
High scorer for the Tigers was
6-2 Bob Swander, who tallied 24.
The Tigers, who boast a seven-
footer in Marvin Seat and a 6-9
junior, Kent Bryan also fared well
from the field, scoring at a 51.8
scoring clip. In fact, they led the
affray until the fourth quarter,
when forward Ernie Turner of
Beaumont sunk a shot from the
corner to tie it at 64-all.
Turner was fouled in the act of
shooting, and missed the free
throw, but Swisher and Johnson
controlled the ball from there and
engineered the victory over pre
viously undefeated Memphis State,
the 1957 National Invitational
Tournament runner-up.
Tonight, the Cadets face power
ful Wake Forest in Winston-Sa
lem, N. C. Tomorrow night, they
clash with Richmond University in
Richmond, Va. and Saturday aft
ernoon they face Ohio State before
Midwest regional television audi
ences at Columbus, Ob\o.
James C. Craig raced across the
