Tigers Meet Rattlers
In District Opener
By JOHNNY BARGER
CHS Sports Correspondent
Tonight the Tigers of A&M
Consolidated venture to Navasota
to engage the Rattlers of that city.
This will be the opening District
23AA tilt for both of the schools.
For the game, Coach Dick Garde-
mal is taking a squad of only 22
boys, the smallest Tiger crew of the
season, in number.
Although the group from Nava
sota has lost six in a row, they have
improved steadily since the begin
ning' of the season, and would like
very much to break the losing
habit tonight.
Probable starters for the Tigers
will be as follows: Kenneth Cooner,
left end; Pete Rodriguez, left
tackle; Bennie Jackson, left guai’d;
David McNeely, center; Junius
Clark, right g'uard; Lyndon Harper,
right tackle; Don Avera, right end;
Edgar Feldman, quarterback; Dee
Smith, left half; Alton Arnold,
right half and Steadman Davis
moves from his regular center post
to the fullback slot.

Sunshine once again greeted the
Cadets as they held their final
workout in pads yesterday on Kyle
Field. Bryant’s eager crew of grid-
ders will hold one more light work
out in sweat clothes this after
noon, and then depart for Fort
Worth to meet the TCU Horned
Frogs.
The week began slowly for the
Aggies, as rain forced them to
workout in G. Rollie White Coli
seum for the first two days. Fin
ally, the rain clouds rolled away
and were replaced by some badly-
needed sunshine, and the squad did
have some very light contact work.
The downpour caused indefinite
postponement of the Fish-Cub tilt,
and the officials were forced to
seek another date when the two
teams could meet. However, their
full schedules may not permit them
to play, and the game may be can
celled completely.
The Farmer starting lineup is
only slightly changed, with a shift
in the guard personnel. Darrell
Brown, senior from Dayton, has
moved to the first unit right guard

Carl Luna will open the game at
the other spot.
The only doubtful players for
the Ags are Roddy Osborne, who
injured his knee in the Cougar fray

Abe Martin’s Froggies are anx
iously awaiting the arrival of the
Southwest Conference Champs, and
for the first time since the season
opener against Kansas, senior full
back Buddy Dike will return to
action.

The Convair engineering department is a real “engineers”
engineering department—imaginative, energetic, explora
tive—and exceptional care is exercised to make certain
that each new employee is assigned to the job for which he
is best qualified, depending upon his interest and education.
College graduates are permitted to further their education
aLcither TCU or SMU at company expense, provided their
grades are average or better. Personal recognition and ad
vancement, based strictly on merit, provide an incentive
for rapid professional growth. In addition, you will dis
cover top-notch engineering facilities, excellent working
atmosphere, personal job advantages and salaries that are

Fight for Top Team Spot

The Associated Press
Purdue’s Jack Mollenkopf, Chuck
Mather of Kansas and Abe Martin
of Texas Christian may be in for
a long, chilly afternoon Saturday
even though the weather usually
isn’t cold at this stage of the foot
ball season.
Their teams face the top three
in the national ratings and now
that the experts have shown they
don’t automatically award Oklar
homa the No. 1 sppt, the competi
tion is terrific.
Oklahoma, displaced from the
top for only the third time in two
years, likely will make the Kansas
game a sort of ci’usade to get
back, just as the Sooners did last
year when they yielded to Michi
gan State for just one week. Mich
igan State will be scrapping just
as head against Purdue to retain
its top rating.
TCU takes on third-ranked Tex
as A&M and Coach Martin’s reply
to the suggestion his team might
pull an iipset was: “The Aggies
are better than Oklahoma.” That
might inspire the Aggies to try
to prove it.
Michigan State’s Spartans went
to the top of the heap by routing
Michigan 35-6 last Saturday. On
the records, Purdue hardly looks
like a match even though the
Boilermakers gave Minnesota its
closest game so far. Kansas,
which won by a point over Colo
rado and tied TCU, doesn’t appear
to be in Oklahoma’s class, either
But that’s what was said about
Texas last -week and the mighty
Sooners had a hard time winning
21-7.
Most of the teams ranked in the
top ten have difficult assignments.
Minnesota, No. 4, visits Illinois,
which always is dangerous at
homecoming time. Illinois Coach
Ray Eliot figures little errors were
responsible for defeats by UCLA
and Ohio State.
