During the cattlemen’s two days on campus they heard discussions by A&M System staff members on all major phases of beef production which bear on profitable operation and conducted an association busi ness meeting. Yesterday morning they were shown a group of animals on-the- hoof and asked to judge them for carcass quality characteristics. These animals were slaughtered, graded and the carcasses evaluated while members attended lectures on the importance of reproductive per formance in cattle; nutrition fac tors affecting profitable production and the part parasites play in the production picture and marketing methods research, both at stock yards and in the kitchen. A program for the members’ wives was arranged that included an informal dinner, research of in terest to women, a coffee at the home of President and Mrs. M. T. Harrington, and lunch with the A&M Corps of Cadets. Cates, a sophomore physics ma jor has been assigned to Troop 735 to act as neighborhood commission er. His specialty is outdoor cook ing and first aid. ML Conference seems A&M Employees To Get Holidays The 10 legal holidays plus a three-week vacation for full-time, twelve month employees of the state will also apply to A&M’s em ployees, said Charles Roeber, bus iness manager of the college. The holidays are provided for in House Bill No. 133 of the 55th Texas Legislature. In addition, A&M employees will be able to contribute up to $504 per year instead of the present $180 per year to their retirement program if the Employes Retire ment System bill passes in the Constitutional Amendments elec tion Nov. 5. Registration for the Fourteenth Annual Junior College Conference will be held in the M.S.C. lobby be ginning Sunday afternoon, Septem ber 29. A registration fee of $2 will be charged for the conference, which will try to coordinate junior and senior college programs in the first two years of college. The conference will adjourn at noon Tuesday, Oct. 1, and all con ference members wishing to attend the fnfpfmal lunchepn session scheduled for noon Monday may purchase tickets when they reg ister. CIRCLE TONIGHT Policemen Learn To Solve Motor Vehicle Crimes Texas police trainees, meeting in the Memorial Student Center for the Texas Municipal Police School, Thursday received train ing in the investigation of auto theft and other crimes involving motor vehicles. Instructor was C. C. Benson from the National Auto Theft Bu reau’s Dallas office. Benson instructed the trainees on how to interrogate auto theft suspects and investigate automobile fires. At a session Friday from 9 to 12 the students were in structed on how to detect counter feit money and to apprehend coun terfeiters. Forest V. Sorrel, a member of the United States Sec ret Service was the instructor. Area Employment Down In August Nonfarm employment in Bryan- College Station decreased slightly during August, according to James H. Berry, area manager of the Bryan-College Station office of the Texas Employment Commis sion. The September 1 estimate sets employment here at 13,490, or ap proximately 44 below the level of one month ago and 40 above last year at this time. During August, the Bi’yan office of the Texas Employment Commis sion placed 310 local men and wo men in new nonfarm jobs.
