In place of “blind obedience” in the Corps, I believe there is actually a feeling of resentment to interference by anyone other than students into Corps policies. True there are some “gung ho” people in the Corps who base most of their thinking purely on emotion, and I’m not claiming the Corps is by any means perfect. But although the Corps hinders a few people in this ability to think unbiasedly, there are factors at other schools which wc don’t have here, such as social and in a few cases religious pressures which also do the same thing for a small group of people there. I believe the good received from the Corps is dependent upon the individual and therefore I wouldn’t vote for a compulsory Corps either, but I believe the Corps does have something to offer in the development of an open-minded, inquiring attitude toward life. Kenneth Haggard ’58 Editor The Battalion: We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks for the fund raised by the Aggies for the benefit of our son Victor. We deeply appreciate this spirit of helpfulness shown by everyone at A&M. Sincerely, Mr. and Airs. S. B. Zuckero Editor The Battalion To the Students in the School of Agriculture I am grateful to you for the beautiful silver platter which you gave to me through the Student Agricultural Council. I will always love and cherish this gift, with its inscription, as my most prized award for your friendship and loyalty to me down through the years. My happiness has been working with you and the success you attain after leaving college. Even though you had rather face a machine gun than one of my lectures, I want you to remember me by my theme songs-“Goals are like stars; they may not be reached, but they can always be a guide.” To those who have not finished college — “LOST YESTERDAY, Somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two Golden Hours, each set with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered for they are gone FOREVER.” Lillian E. Ferguson Secretary to Dean of Agri culture Editor, The Battalion 1 read your paper regularly and on the question of compulsory be longing to the Corps, I would like very much to have my say so! Not as an Aggie but as the mother of one. To begin with, the tradition of A&M has been military for as long as there has been an Aggie- land, so why bother to go there THURSDAY & FRIDAY ‘‘Written On The Wind” with ROCK HUDSON Plus “New Orleans Uncensored” with BEVERLY GARLAND S A T U R D A Y — RANDOLPH SCOTT NITE — “Gunfighter” “Riding Shotgun” “The Stranger Wore A Gun” COMMISSIONING of Air Force and Army Cadets was included in the all day after of graduation and final review this year. Here the cadets are receiving their oaths of office. if you don’t belong to the Corps. Certainly, I find in my own ex perience I could have sent my son to several colleges much closer and at less expense than A&M. But as anyone can see, we are living in an age of unrest and wars, and aren’t the best prepared men the ones who will go the farthest to keep our country safe and sound? Believe me, I’m no war lover but I don’t want my son shoved out on the front lines un prepared either. If you take the Corps and dis cipline from A&M you only have just an ordinary school left. One which you can find in almost any city. I am an Aggie supporter and in tend to stay that way. I was there Mother’s Day and saw several “non-regs” which were not even properly dressed to meet anyone. Frankly, I was very proud of the Corps when they were on review and am glad to Say I was proud my son was one of them. So why let the “non-regs” ride to fame and glory on the Aggie tradition. If it isn’t worth the work and time it takes' to be in the Corps the stability isn’t in the man anyway. He can always go elsewhere. So let’s keep it military. I’d love to see my grandchildren go there. Sincerely, Mrs. C. C. Koehler Lowake, Tex. (Editors Note: Thanks very much for the letter. We always welcome letters from parents and former students.,) Molly Pitcher, heroine of the American Revolution, was really named Mary McCaulay.
