1 The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas PAGE 6 Thursday, May 16, 1957 ^^avoriteS By RUTH YARBROUGH STREUSEL COFFEE CAKE 14 cup butter Streusel mixture: 3 A cup sugar % ‘cup brown sugar 1 egg 2 tablespoons flour 1% cups sifted flour 2 tablespqons butter % teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon cinnamon % cup chopped nuts Vz cup milk Combine the butter, sugar and egg; cream until fluffy. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon together; mix in these dry ingx*edients alternately with milk. Pour into greased 8 by 8 by 2 pan. Combine ingredients for streusel to make a crumbly mixture and sprinkle over batter. Bake in quick moderate oven (375 degrees) for about 35 minutes. Be careful not to overcook. DEVILED MEAT SLICES This is my own recipe for left-over roast. We think it is delicious. 1-in. thin chips left-over 2 teaspoons prepared mustard roast 2 tablespoons butter 14 cup flour 1 cup water 3 tablespoons butter 1 small onion, grated 1 teaspoon Worcestershire 14 teaspoon salt Sauce • 14 teaspoon pepper Roll meat slices in 14 cup flour. Melt 3 tablespoons butter in a skillet. While the meat is browning in this skillet, melt the 2 tablespoons butter in a separate pan. Then add flour until smooth. Combine Worcestershire sauce, mustard, onion, salt and pepper. Add water and bring to a slow boil. Mix with browned meat and simmer for about 5 minutes. Serves 2-4. SUGAR AND CINNAMON BALLS 1 cup shortening 2 teaspoons cream tartar 114 cups sugar «- 1 teaspoon soda 2 eggs 1 teaspoon salt 2% cups flour Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Sift together flour, cream of tarter, soda, salt and stir into shortening mixture. Chill dough. Roll into a ball one inch in diameter. Roll balls in mixture of two tablespoons of sugar and two tablespoons of cinnamon. Bake at 350 degrees. ROLL-AWAY CHOCOLATE BALLS cups margarine. % cup cocoa % cup sugar 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon vanilla Vs teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped pecans Cream sugar and butter until fluffy; add vanilla. Sift together flour, salt and cocoa. Gradually add to butter and sugar mixture. Blend in chopped pecans. Mix thoroughly. Refrigerate for six hours. Roll into balls about one inch in size and bake *on ungreased cookie sheet, placing about % inch apart. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Roll in powhered sugai\ Makes six dozen.
