Connor, who expects to keep cool as a summer missionary to Alaska, is a junior pre-niedical student from Bryan. A senior fi’om Raytown, Manley will be a summer BSU missionary in the Islands. In addition to this appointment he has also been elected to serve on the BSU state executive committee during the coming school year. The whooping crane, which has been tottering on the brink of extinction for some time, has found another friend. Latest organization to proffer a helping for protection of this rare species is Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. Action in regard to the whooping cranes was included in a broad 10 point conservation policy adopted at the annual state convention held recently in San Antonio. A&M Garden club, which won several awards, was represented at the meeting by Mrs. Tom Taylor, president, Mrs.. Eddie Baker, first vice-president, and Mrs. Marion Pugh, District V conservation chairman. Mrs. Taylor accepted the follow ing awards on behalf of the local club: First place for two-year scrap book compiled by Mrs. R. E. Snuggs. Certificate of Merit for Ad vanced club. Third place for yearbook and honorable mention for scrapbook of “Little Sprouts” Junior Garden club. “Horticultural Stewardship in the Preservation of America” will be the theme of Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. during the coming year under the administration of the new state president, Mrs. David H. Buchanan of Temple. Projects of the new program will include, in addition to protection for birds and wild flowers, Arbor Day plantings, insect control, lit- terbug campaign and roadside development and beautification.
