Ag Nine Meets Rice Friday
Ags Hope to End
Scoreless Drought
NOT A DROP TO DRINK—Aggie broadjumper Dale El
more takes a discouraged look at the puddle standing in the
pit at Kyle Field yesterday. Elmore leaped 23-% last
Friday to take first in the triangular with Rice and Baylor.
Sugar KO’s Fullmer
To Win Back Title
CHICAGO, (H 5 )—Sugar Ray Robinson brushed back the
years for one electrifying burst of violence last night to knock
out champion Gene Fullmer with a left hook to the jaw in
1:27 of the fifth round.
Thus the Sugar Man became the first man ever to win
the world middleweight title four times.
Robinson, a 3%!'l under
dog, softened up the 25-year-
old champion with two solid
right hand punches to the
body and then drove home a
terrific left that dropped Fullmer
to the Chicago Stadium deck.
Writhing- on the canvas, Full
mer attempted to get upi But he
jack-knifed back on his face and
was counted out by Referee Frank
Sikora, the first time he had been
stopped in his 44-bout career.

The Aggies attempt to end 33
scoreless innings of baseball and
at the same time bring to a halt
a losing streak that has swelled to
seven games when they engage the
Rice Owls in a SWC double-header
beginning at 1:30 p. m. Friday on
Kyle Field.
Dick Munday of Bryan and
southpaw Toby Newton of Gal
veston are slated to take the mound
for the Cadets who could rise from
the cellar by sweeping the twin-
bill from the Owls. Rice is 2-6 in
conference and the Aggies 1-7.
A&M has a season record of 2-12.
Rice defeated the Aggies last
Friday in Houston, 1 to 0, with
Munday credited with a heart
breaking loss in a bidlliant three-
hit performance that saw him walk
only two and lower his ERA in
SWC action to 1.62 over 27-%
innings. The ace righthander has
yielded only five earned runs in
conference and only one in his last
19 innings pitched.
The last time the Aggies scored
against any competition was in the
third inning of the second game
with SMU when they took a 1-0
lead in the third only to blow it
Sons and daughters of Adios
won more than $1,000,000 during
1956. It was a record for a har
ness racing stallion.

in the fourth when two unearned
runs scored against Munday after
he had given up two singles that
were the only hits by the Mustangs
that day.
The only victory for A&M in
conference, was a 4-2 win over
Baylor on March 30 and Munday
was the victor, though being re
lieved by Donnie Hullum in the
seventh.
Jihi Smotherman of Frisco,
junior rightfielder, continues to
lead Aggie hitters with a .324
average in conference on 13 hits in
37 at-bats. Smotherman leads in
the slugging department with two
doubles, two triples and a homer
that won the Baylor game. He is
hitting .295 for the season.
Following on his heels is the
sophomore catcher Gary Herring
ton of Baytown with a .300 average
on nine hits in 30 tries. Infielder
Lupe Fraga is hitting .313 but has
been af-bat only 16 times. Herring
ton has .292 season mark. Third
baseman Wendell Reed and second
baseman Doug Mullins follow with
.294 and .250 averages.
The three mainstays of the Cadet
mound staff this year have been
Newton (1-3), Munday (1-4) and
Hullum (0-2), with Hullum going
mostly in relief. Bo Paradowski
(0-1), a lefthander from Bryan,
looked good two weeks ago against
the Crowley Millers before tiring in
the seventh and losing. Paul Lang
(0-2) has been used in relief.
Newton has tossed the most
innings, 37-%, striking out 34 and
walking 26 for an ERA of 2.86.
Hullum has pitched 34-% innings
and boasts a season ERA of 2.59.
He has struck out 21 and walked
18.
