Moonwatchers To
Begin Training
Moonwatchers training is to be
gin very shortly, acording to Jack
T. Kent, head of the moon watch
team.
Kent said there will be five
meetings before the end of school;
one for building the telescope, two
others for learning how to use as
tronomical maps and the last two
for training sessions.
“Anyone wishing to participate
in the program is urged to call me,
since we need some more members
on the team,” said Kent.
The A&M team is one of 65
teams which will track the satel
lite that is to be launched by the
government shortly. There will be
at least six satellites sent up into,
the atmosphere by the government^
Kent said.
The local team’s part in the pro
gram is so important that Dr.
George Van Biesbroeck, world-
famous astronomer, was on the
campus last week to talk to Kent.
This team may be the only team
to see the small (20 inches in di
ameter) satellite go into space.
Therefore, the team may be the
most vital in the total operation,
he said.
Lions Club Honors
Local Dribblers
Members of the basketball teams
of A&M Consolidated -and Stephen
F. Austin (Bryan) High School
will be honored at a dinner in the
Triangle Dining Room Monday at
7 p. m. Their hosts will be the
Bryan-College Station Lions Club.
“If no team spots it, it will cost
the government a billion or more
dollars,” said Kent.
Kent urges the Moonwatchers to
report to his office every couple
of days to see if new developments
have taken place in the program.
He also urges them to go by the
physics shop to help with the con
struction of the telescope, and to
report in as soon as possible for
assignments.
The first meeting will be for
working out a means for alerting
the members quickly, he said.
