VOTING
(Continued from Page 1)
zens of a community or a state
feel that they are too busy to deal
with political issues, the gangsters
and thugs in the community will
be only too happy to take over the
government. They have done this
in many communities.
The intelligent voter must do
more than be impressed by names
and parrot inane slogans. He
must learn something about the
candidates and the things they
stand for. Several years ago in
Texas a man ran for a state of
fice after having changed his name
to that of a well-known political
family. Late in the campaign the
court took the new name from him
and he had to withdraw from the
race.
However, the ballots had been
printed and the name remained for
consideration by the voters. The
papers made a great deal of the
story, but the man received more
than 100,000 votes. These 100,000
voters were not voting intelligent
ly-
An educated citizen has the re
sponsibility of voting and voting
intelligently. To do this you must
be influenced by something more
than a familiar name, a slogan, or
the fact that the man lives in your
part of the country or the cam
pus.
Democracy, on the campus and
in the nation, demands that you
give elections both time and in
telligent study.

Riots to Chile
SANTIAGO, Chile, <^>) —
Street mobs fought soldiers
and police in the heart of
Chile’s capital yesterday in re
newed rioting- against the run
away cost of living.
From 40 to 70 persons are unof
ficially estimated to have been
killed and more than 200 injured
in a week-long wave of disorder
that has caused property damage
in excess of two million dollars.
Defying emergency military law
clamped on the entire nation,
truckloads of rioters from the out
lying poorer sections joined in to
day’s demonstrations to complain
of a new spurt in the inflation
spiral which has gone steadily up
ward in Chile since World War II.
About 1,000 Chileans attacked
police and army troops.
