t V Cage Flit lire Up W illi Lawrence By JAMES CARRELL Though finishing a somewhat dismal season, the Aggie basketball team still compiled, on the basis of a 7-17 season, the best record since 1952, when the Aggies began their march on the conference cellar with a 9-15 won-lost mark. The arrival of Ken Loeffler in 1955, saw the Aggie cage fortunes rise, lifting A&M from the cellar floor where they had dwelled for three years during 1953-54-55. This year A&M won three conference games as in 1956, but dropped into a last place tie with Texas, though beating them twice during scheduled conference play for the first time in 34 years. Now, the era of the tall man arrives, and with it a blightei look into the futuie i ^ a jj man. He tossed in 40 points in the person of Wayne Lawrence, the 6-9 freshman, who becomes the highest scor ing freshman in the history of basketball at A&M College with 308 points in 11 games and a 28- point average. Lawrence, the best freshman basketballer in the Southwest, is a well-developed and coordinated 200-pounder expected shortly to be gin a reign as the league’s best against the Rice Owlets in Houston Friday night, raising his field goal percentage to .483. The brilliant Connecticut lad is a strong, outside shooter and fine rebounder, clearing the boards of 174 rebounds for an average of 15.8. Swisher finished tenth in the conference in season scoring. In behalf of Mehaffey, who has finished a fine basketball career at A&M, it might be said that an ankle injury kept him from the last three games and with it a place among the top scorers in the Southwest Conference. Injured in the Arkansas game, when he scored two points, he played with a painful, swollen ankle against TCU and Baylor, netting only 15 points and fouling out early in both tilts. The total of swishers for Swisher ran to 114 out of 297 shots, a .384 percentage, and a 12.6 average in 24 games. Mehaffey averaged 14.2 in 21 games. Missing three games and the most part of three others, Mehaf fey still led the club in rebounding, totaling 208. Swisher, the 6-1 sophomore from Victoria, followed with 169. rebounds. Only two seniors, George Me haffey and Ted Harrod, graduate from the squad that made its presence known late in the season. Finishing as one of the tougher teams in the league, the Aggies whipped Texas twice and Baylor, and saw the official’s whistle blow away “almost” victories against TCU and Rice. The tardy awakening of basket ball ability in Jim McNichol pro vided a needed spark to the Aggie attack in replacing Mehaffey and contributing 21 points against SMU and 24 against Texas. Ken Hutto scored 258 points over the season route, averaging 10.7, followed by Jack Schwake with 131, Ted Harrod 126, Ernie Turner 122, Jim McNichol 111, and Fritzie Connally 60. In conference play Swisher had 149 points and a 12.4 average in 12 games, while Mehaffey scored 116 in nine games for a 12.8 average. Trigon Toros Meet Units in Basketball By GARY ROLLINS The Trigon Toros, A&M’s Military counterpart of the St. Louis Hawks, has issued a challenge to any cadet organ ization wishing to play basket ball. The Toros, all from the Military Kreuger, Crow Voted ’57 Captains John Crow and Charlie Krueger were elected Aggie 1957 football captains by the varsity squad yes terday. Crow and Krueger, both senior two-year lettermen, were un animous all-Southwest Conference choices in 1956 and Krueger was named to the International News Service all-American team. Crow, the 217-pound halfback who came out of the Louisiana swamps to help put A&M on the football map, was released Tuesday from Houston’s Hermann Hospital after undergoing surgery. The Springhill boy, who will miss Spring training, had a bone chip removed from his right ankle and will wear a heavy cast on the foot that crossed 12 double stripes last fall. “The operation was even more successful than the doctors had hoped,” said the obviously-pleased Crow. Paul Love joy, Sgt. William J. Brown, and Sgt. Homer Brodie. So far this season the Toros have won two, lost four, and tied one. Their two victories were over “A” Armor, and “B” Armor. How ever, both tanker units possess vie tories over the Toros. Their one tie game was with “C” Infantry. In off-campus games, the gentle- men-in-khaki have not fared well, losing their only game to St Joseph’s SCYO of Bryan. Any outfit wishing to try their luck against the “terrors of the hardwood” can contact Capt. Staf ford at VI 6-4119 in the Military Science Bldg.
