By BOB CLENDENNEN
The Bear and his brood sweated
out the weather for a half hour
yesterday, but the head knocking
and hitting came off as scheduled.
The showers came and the field
Was sloppy, but the boys who
Wanted to play were out en mass to
carry out the coaches’ wishes.
There are almost a dozen cripples
on the squad, and that doesn’t help
anyone, especially the coach who
makes out the drill sheet.
Balls were lost and passes drop
ped, but the villain was the
weather; football players were too
busy having a good time to make
many mistakes. Most of the men
are coming around to something
resembling good condition, and
they are getting used to the long
and repetitious grind. When the
players start to enjoy the practices,
the road is smoother.
Linemen hit harder Wednesday,
and there were crushing tackles
all over the field, reminiscent of
Saturday afternoons last fall.
Backs ran harder, and began to
unconsciously give that second ef
fort so necessary for that “one
more yard.” Though footing was
unsure and their cleats clogged
with mud, there were lots of good
sweeps and power plays up the
middle. They gave the defensive
teams something to worry about.
The off-and-on showers slowed
down everyone a little, and that’s
bad, but the stiff breeze brought
reflexes alive and gave the hard
working scrimmagers some much
needed air - conditioning. (And
that’s good.)
The teams had hustle and drive
to match their shouts and claps,
and the general concensus of
coaches’ opinions was “satis
factory.”
The rain let up the last 4C
minutes and some of the best work
of the season took place. The Ag
gies sprinted into the dressing
rooms at 6:20 p. m.
At the training table after
practice, a soph-to-be had an un-1
nerving experience. He was asked I
by a line coach if the thick steak
he had for supper was enjoyable.
“Yessir.” The coach said, “Well,
son, if you want to stay up here |
with the football players, you will
just have to do better on those
gauntlet drills.” (Tackling prac
tice.)
The chastized athlete sat with I
bowed head until the coach walked
away. As he mentally vowed to
do better, the guard coach walked |
past and put a hand on his
shoulder.
“Boy, I liked the way you hit
people on that middle drill. Keep
it up and you’ll play lots of ball
down here.” As the second coach
walked away, the bruised and
scratched hopeful turned to me,
shuddered, and pushed away from
the table quickly.
I’m a student coach.
