CHS Lad In Finals
For Scholarship
David Webb, A&M Consolidated
Hig-h School senior, has been named
a finalist in the National Merit
Schalarship competition accox-d-
ing to J. J. Skrivanek, principal.
One hundred and sixty two
thousand high school seniors from
12,500 schools over the nation took
the nationwide college aptitude
examination on October 24. Webb
was among the 7,500 students who
scored highest in the tests.
At stake for Webb, son of Mrs.
Lois Webb, 108 Park Place, and
the other finalists are more than
700 four-year scholarships to the
schools of their choice sponsored by
business and industry.
Before receiving a scholarship
now, Webb must pass the College
Board Examination Saturday and
face intensive screening of his
leadership and extra-curricular re
cords by a selection board.
“The examination will probably
eliminate 500 of the finalists,” John
M. Stalnaker, president of the Na
tional Merit Scholarship Corpo
ration said. “Then there will still
be about 10 qualified students for
each scholarship available.”
Two other CHS seniors, Maui'ice
Olian and Jo Anne Walker took the
tests. Reportedly, Olian missed the
finals by one point. This was the
first year that anyone from the
school has reached the finals. The
DAVID WEBB
scholarships were first awarded
last year.
The tests covered a variety of
subjects ranging from music to
foreign languages. Value of the
scholarships range, according to
need, from $100 per year upwards.
556 winners from last year are
now freshmen at 160 different col
leges.
Runners-up for the contest re
ceive Certificates of Merit which
will make them eligible to be con
sidered for many other awards
and scholax-ships.
“If I win a scholarship I plan
to attend A&M and major in
Aeronautical Engineering,” Webb
said.
