The Aggie Fish, paced by Wayne Lawrence’s 31 points, blasted Wharton Junior College, 78-63, in the opener. Captain George Mehaffey and Neil Swisher led the fighting Ag-- gies to within a breath of the up set of the year over the nation’s fourth-ranked five. Mehaffey com pletely outplayed 6-8 Jim Krebs, supposedly the SWC’s finest big man, scoring 23 points and grab bing 19 rebounds while Swisher scored 17, repeatedly stole the ball and ran circles around the bewil dered Ponies. Krebs scored 30 to take honors for the night, but could manage only 11 rebounds against his much shorter opponents and constantly found himself faked out by the ter rific offensive play of the 6-4 Mehaffey. To the delight of a partisan crowd of 5,000, the Aggies roared off to a quick 4-0 lead before the Mustangs could get their feet un tangled. SMU found the range and pulled away to a 9-6 margin before field goals by Mehaffey and Swisher moved A&M to 11-10. 103 MAIN — NORTH GATE AGGIE OWNED BATTLE FOR THE BALL—as A&M’s Neil Swisher (66) and George Mehaffey (behind No. 15) go up with Jim Krebs (behind Swisher) and Rick Herrscher (15) in last night’s action.
