Bears Even Choice
Over Detroit Lions
CHICAGO, (iP)—In pro football,
there ? s nothing like “Home Sweet
Home.”
That appears the chief reason
the Bears are a surprise even-
money bet with the Detroit Lions
in Sunday’s Wrigley Field show
down for the Western Division ti
tle of the National Football
League.
Consider that just two weeks
ago, the Lions belted the Bears,
42-10, at Detroit to move a half
game ahead of the Bears, a mar
gin they still hold.
Mehaffey Hits 32
In Third Victory
Senior Ted Harrod was left in
New Orleans under the care of a
physician with a high fever and
will return to his North Little
Rock, Ark., home today.
The Aggies took the lead after
4:40 of the first half at 7-6 and
were never headed. A&M left the
floor at the intermission with a
46-36 lead and the closest the
Seminoles came was six points with
eight minutes remaining.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Spl)—
Coach Ken Loeffler’s Aggies
shocked a dedication crowd of
3,500 here last night as they
pounded the Florida State Semi
noles, 83-74, for their first road
victory in 19 tries.
A&M broke Florida State’s 23-
game victory train on their own
court as they rebounded from two
previous losses on their trip and
HIGH-SCORING SOPH—is A&M’s Jack Schwake, who has
been high-point man for the Aggies twice this season.
Schwake has been ill on the present road trip and is not
at his top scoring game.
cast a shadow on the ceremonies
dedicating the new Seminole field
house.
Captain George Mehaffey ripped
the nets for 32 points, hitting 10
of 18 field goal attempts, 12 of
14 free throws and snatching off
16 rebounds to personally lead the
Aggies to their first win away
from home under Loeffler. Mehaf
fey played magnificently, going
the entire first half without com
mitting a personal foul. The 6-4
senior left the game after nine
minutes of the second half with
five personals to a standing
ovation.
The Aggies battled the odds to
their third victory of the season,
pulling their record to 3-4. The
Cadets managed but five hours
sleep the night before the game
after a hard bus ride from Hatties
burg, Miss., to New Orleans, and
every man became airsick on the
rough ride from New Orleans to
Tallahassee.
A&M’s three top scorers fouled
out. Ken Hutto left the game
after 18 minutes of the first half
with 14 points and sophomore Neil
Swisher, playing with an injured
ankle, fouled out midway in the
second half after adding 13 to the
Aggie total.
