Big-time Coaches
Deny Grid Rumor
By HUGH FULLERTON, JR.
NEW YORK, (iP)—With a half-dozen or so of the best
coaching jobs in college football up for grabs, the “big name”
men of the coaching profession can expect to spend, a lot of
time denying rumors for the next month or so.
The losers’ slogan at this stage no longer is “Hang The
Coach” but “Let’s Get The Best.”
With the end of the 1956 college season, three head
coaches with long and honorable records have gone into re
tirement and a half-dozen others have resigned—or have
been politely fired—at major colleges.
The list reads like this:
Retired — Lou Little, Col-y
umbia, Don Faurot, Missouri,
ViSM
Wk - . ■m.A-
and Jesse Hill, Southern Cal
ifornia. The last two are
moving into athletic direc
tors’ posts.
Resigned — Ed Price, Texas;
Chalmer (Woody) Woodard, South
ern Methodist; Bernie Crimmins,
Indiana; Vince DiFrancesca, Iowa
ifornia, and just yesterday, John
Sauer, The Citadel.
In addition, Roy Dennis of Oc
cidental resigned in November to
devote his full time to academic
work and Track Coach Chuck Cok
er was named last week to suc
ceed him. And 60-year-old Earl
(Fuzz) Merritt of Pomona-Clare-
mont College in California asked
Stat; Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf, Cal- to be relieved by a younger man.

Ags Looking for First
Against Miss.
BY BARRY HART
Battalion Sports Editor
Still looking for their first on-
the-road victory, A&M’s basket-
bailers motor to Hattiesburg, Miss.,
from New Orleans tonight to face
Mississippi Southern.
On the second leg of their five-
game pre-Christmas trip, the Ag
gies of Coach Ken Loeffler hope to
pull their season record to 3-3,
having lost all their away games,
while beating Trinity and St.
Mary’s at home.
A&M opened the trip with a
close, 71-68, loss to the Loyola
Wolf pack after leading by five
points at the half. They will stay
in New Orleans until tomorrow,
then fly to Tallahassee, Fla., for
their contest with Florida State.
The Aggies will play Georgia Tech
Saturday in Atlanta, Ga., and end
with Miami at Coral Gables next
Tuesday.
Immediately after Christmas,
Loeffler takes his quintet to Hous
ton for the Southwest Conference
pre-season tournament on Dec.
27-29. The Aggies will open with
Navy in Houston.
Probable starters tonight for
A&M will find Captain George
Mehaffey (6-4), Ken Hutto (6-0),
Neil Swisher (6-1), Jim NcNichol
(6-5) and Jack Schwake (6-5).
The remainder of the Aggie
hern
roster is Ted Harrod (6-0), Tom
Kolle (6-4), Fritzie Connally (6-2),
Ernie Turner (6-4) and Stu
Heller (6-6).
The Aggies opened the season in
Shreveport with a loss to Centen
ary, 67-59, returned to White
Coliseum to trim St. Mary’s, 69-60,
blow one to the Sam Houston
Bearkats in Huntsville, 59-58, then
evened up the season back home
by crushing the Trinity Tigers,
81-55.
Coach Lee Frasier’s Aggie Fish
are idle until after the holidays,
with their next game against the
Rice Slimes in White Coliseum
Jan. 3.
THE AGGIES’ JIM McNICHOL—6-5 sophomore who has
won a starting- position on the A&M quint with his fine
offensive work will probably start tonight against Missis
sippi Southern.
