Cadets Face 34- Year Jinx
In UT’s Memorial Stadium
Tri-Captain and Fullback Jack Pardee

Battalion Sports Editor
In an age-old rivalry that out-
dates the Southwest Conference
itself, A&M battles the University
of Texas in their traditional
Thanksgiving Day contest Thurs
day in Memorial Stadium.
This one rivals Yale-Harvard,
Army-Navy and Minnesota-Mich-
igan in folklore and color. The
series goes clear back into the
19th century, starting in 1894. The
two state schools have met almost
continuously, playing 62 times in
the 62 years. The Longhorns own
a lopsided margin over the Aggies,
winning 41 to A&M’s 16 with five
games tied.
Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant’s Ma
roon journey to Austin into the
biggest jinx in collegiate football.
Never has an A&M team come
out of Texas’ Memorial Stadium
the winner, and only once, in 1922,
did the Aggies win in Austin,
fashioning a 14-7 victory in the
old stadium.
A&M has beaten the Steers only
once since 1939, edging the Uni
versity, 22-21, on Kyle Field in
1951. Last year Coach Ed Price’s
downtrodden Longhorns rose up
to smite the Aggies, 21-6, on the
Kyle Field turf to bounce the Ca- season, their only mark a 14-14
dets out of the SWC title. tie to the Houston Cougars.
Bryant takes an unbeaten, once-
tied eleven into the Memorial Sta
dium jinx to meet a Texas team
that has won one, lost eight, but
will surely come through with su
perhuman feat in hopes of keep
ing their undefeated string alive.
Enthusiasm is at a fever pitch
on the Texas campus. “Smokey”,
the cowboy cannon fired after
Longhorn touchdown, is to be
shot every hour on the hour, a
snake dance has been set to wiggle
from the University to downtown
Austin, the annual “Orange and
White parade” is slated for Wed
nesday afternoon and the tradi-
tiohal Aggie bonfire Wednesday
night- . ^
The Aggies are 18-point favor
ites to break the 34-year bondage
and win the SWC championship
outright. A loss to the Longhorns
would drop the Aggies into a tie
for the title should TCU beat SMU
Saturday. The Maroon stands 5-0
for the league and 8-0-1 on the
Texas, on the other hand, owns
a 7-6 victory over Tulane and are
in danger of becoming the first
Longhorn team to fail to win a
conference game.
Fighting for the first A&M title
since 1941, 10 Aggie seniors will
be playing their final game for
the Maroon and White. Thanks
to the ruling of the NCAA keep
ing A&M out of any post-season
games, Jack Pardee, Don Watson,
'George Gillar, Dennis Goehring,
Lloyd Hale, Dee Powell, Bobby
Lockett, Gene (Bebes) Stallings,
Bobby Drake Keith and Bob Clen-
dennon will put on the pads for the
final time as Aggies.
