The Battalion College Station (Brazos County), Texas PAGE 4 Tuesday, November 27, 1956 Bryant and Staff Took Ags to Top In 2 Years By DON BISETT The A&M football team has moulded itself into a feared ma chine and the men who have guid ed this accomplishment are Paul “Bear” Bryant and his assistants. The men on the team and those who know football are the first to give our coaches the credit for this performance. Coach Bryant played his college ball at Alabama in the mid-thirties under Frank Thomas. His coach ing started as an assistant at Alabama and continued at Vander bilt until World War II. He coach ed Maryland to a 6-2-1 season in 1945 before going to Kentucky where he was head coach for eight years. His record there was terrific as he took his teams to four bowl games, winning three of them and having an overall record of 60-23-5. This is Bryant’s third year here at A&M where his record to date is 16-11-2. This gives him an overall record of 82-36-8 which marks him as one of the most successful coaches in the business. His assistants include a former all-American in Jim Owens who is a developer of all-Americans at his position at end. Owens has been on the Bryant staff since 1950 when he joined him at Kentucky. He was the coach of Howie Schellenberger and Steve Meilling- er when they made All American at Kentucky. Phil Cutchin is a backfield as sistant for the Aggies having come here with Bryan from Kentucky also. His coaching career has run since 1946 excepting a stint in the service in the Korean conflict. Elmer Smith came to the Aggies from Southern Arkansas State Col lege. His Magnolia Arkansas team had a record of 54-27-2 which any man can be proud of. Jerry Claiborne played under Bryant at Kentucky then was coaching there when Bryant asked him to come to the Aggies. He is a line coach who works especially with the ends. Willie Zapalac is the only man on the staff who played his foot ball at A&M. He played here on the 1941-42 and 46 squads. Zapalac is a backfield coach who is help ing to develop such stars as jCrow and Pardee. Tom Tipps played ball at Sul Ross before amassing a great high school coaching record at Pampa then coming to A&M as assistant line coach. Pat James played under Bryant at Kentucky where he starred at a guard position. Here he helps with the mighty A&M line. A newcomer to the coaching staff this year is Sam Bailey who followed Smith from Arkansas. He had six years experience as a backfield coach before joining the A&M staff. Coach Paul (Bear) Bryant TCU Calls Aggies ‘Pros’ Quoted from TCU “Skiff” of Nov. 23: First off, since we don’t want to get left behind, a few words about our friends from College Station. The Aggies seem to have taken the refusal of the NCAA to lift the bowl ban imposed on them rather bittex-ly. The yelps have been loud and long. But we wonder, if the Aggies had thus far lost nine straight. just how loud or long would their yells be? Just because the players they bought and paid for happen to do the job for which they were hired is no reason for sympathy. Of course, the Frogs, or any other team in the conference, won’t like the idea of being “cheese champs,” but then, jieither do they like the idea of having a semi- pro team in amateur confer ence.
