The Battalion PAGE 2 College Station (Brazos County), Texas Thursday, November 15, 1956 Students Simmering Over JMlAA Ruling By JOE TINDEL Aggie moods of anger and dis appointment lessened somewhat yesterday as students began to realize the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s refusal to lift the Cotton Bowl ban was final. Yesterday some students were able to express opinions without too much emotion. John Mayfield, junior business administration major in Squadron 5, calmly stated his opinion. “I think that A&M benefited from the NCAA ruling in some ways,” he said. “We got a lot of good, free publicity and besides that, I think the team will be help ed some. The ruling will inspire them to play good ball the rest of this year to show that they are champions. It will also make them play well next year.” Bill Maxwell, freshman chemical engineering major in Squadron 18 said he had Suspected that the rul ing would be as it was. “I was disappointed like a lot of other Aggies but with the NCAA law like it was, it had to come out that way,” he said. Bill Yates, sophomore civilian student majoring in personnel management, gave his first re iction. “First thing I thought of was that i lot of Aggies who had planned .,o go to the Cotton Bowl were go ng to be awfully disappointed. Generally Aggies were in accord with Bill Dorsey, head yell leader, who Tuesday night said: “We don’t have to play in the Cotton Bowl, Army. We can have our own bowl game down at Austin on Thanksgiving when we beat the h— out of Texas.” Chest Funds i) (Continued from Page initely in the minority.” “We hope that collectors and zone chairmen can contact every one and get every possible contri bution,” Dr. John Milliff, co-chair man of the drive said. “Our only big source of revenue left is the contribution from the Bryan Air Force Base United Fund. In a sense, however, the drive neveft - ends, and we hope donations will continue all year.” Persons who wish to donate may do so by contacting Milliff, Tip- pit, Thompson or the other co- chairman, Bob Reed. Letters Editor, The Batttalion To The Fightin’ Aggie Football Team: We want you to know that we share your deep feelings about the NCAA’s decision on our probation. We are all proud of the way you have worked to have a team that should be and soon will be rated No. 1 in the nation. I know that if everyone really knew of the spirit you have and so consistently displayed, there would be no doubt in anyone’s mind as to who is going to win the SWC championship. It really looked great to see all of you show you still had this spirit even after the bad news, a hard practice and then come to attention in front of the mess hall Tuesday night when the spirit was played at yell practice. I speak for the men in Sqdn’ 1, who are only a small part of the student body, by saying that you as a team have our vote of confidence and that we believe you have what it takes to beat the h— out of Rice, Texas and the NCAA.
