    Fish Host Rice Slimes
On Kyle Field at 7:30
By JOE DAN BOYD
Assistant Sports Editor
“Both Charles Milstead and
Charles Schlemmer will play in
tonight’s Fish-Slime game,” ac
cording to Assistant Coach Sam
Bailey. “With both our quarter
backs ready, we’re at our best phy
sical condition in weeks.”
Milstead, sidelined from the
Baylor fracas, is back in top form
and the rapidly-improving Schlem
mer continues to draw praise from
the Aggie coaching staff.
“Injuries aren’t entirely whipped,
however,” according to Bailey,
“Larry Ward won’t play in to
night’s game because of a shoulder
injury.” The Nederland power
house has recently been moved
from end position to center and

By BARRY HART

With basketball season some
three weeks off, A&M’s hard-
wooders are beginning to get down
to business.
Coach Ken Loeffler begins his
second season as Aggie head man
with no where to go but up.
“If we come through this year,”
said Loeffler, “We can be up off
the floor by next.”

The Cadets, long the floormat
of the nation’s weakest major
roundball conference, have their
hopes up for the 1950-57 season,
but lack of height is again the
main problem. Sophomore center
Stu Hellel, 6-6 from McKeesport,
Pa., is Loeffler’s chief rebounder,
but has been suffering from an re
occuring ear injury and hasn’t
worked out for the past two weeks.
Heller will probably be back in
uniform next Monday.
After three weeks of getting in
shape and primarily taking it
easy, Loeffler started working his
teams the length of the court this
week, concentrating on ball hand
ling and set shooting. With Heller
missing, A&M’s first varsity five
finds Erwin Turner, 6-4, Jack Sch-
wake, 6-5, Neil Swisher, 6-1, Ken
Hutto, 6-0, and George Mehaffey,
6-4. Mehaffey played for the SWC
All-Stars and scored eight points
as the Stars lost to the 1956 Olym
pic squad, 90-66. Mehaffey is the
only senior, with Hutto a junior
and the other three sophs.
George Kelleher of Springfield,
Mass., and Sam Niness of Bryn
Mawr, Pa., are co-captains of the
Trinity College football team.

Crow ‘Back of Week’
' -'Mustangs Thinking
About '48 Contest
By BARRY HART
Battalion Sports Editor
SMU enters Saturday’s Dallas contest with A&M un
beaten in Southwest Conference play for the first time since
1948 and the Mustangs hope it’s a good omen.
The Ponies on the hilltop last won a conference champion
ship in 1948, beating the Aggies 20-14, but Paul Bryant’s
wrecking crew are out to make sure history doesn’t repeat
itself. A crowd approaching 65,000 is expected in the Cotton
Bowl—the biggest turnout of the season, surpassing the
Notre Dame game which drew 61,000 customers.
The contest will match the all-the-way aerial attack of
SMU against the overwhelming ground game of the heavily-
favored Aggies. The Methodists, with passer Charlie Arnold,
have averaged 140 yards per
game through the air, while
A&M has rolled to 252.7 yards
on foot. The Cadets, who al
lowed their' seven opponents
but 194.1 yards average, 54.7
of that total in the ozone.
Arnold, who a year ago played
only 55 minutes and couldn’t get
the job done, leads the league in
passing yardage and has thrown
for eight touchdowns in six games.
That’s just three short of the SMU
record held by Gil Johnson in 1948
and Fred Benners in 1950 and 51.
For the second week in a row,
A&M’s John Crow, certainly the
SWC’s finest halfback, won the
Dallas News Back of the Week
award on the basis of his fine all-
around play against Arkansas.
Crow gained 72 yards, scored twice
and was his usual devastating self
on defense.
TRI-CAPTAIN BEBES STALLINGS—all-Southwest Con
ference left end in 1955 who made a terrific catch of Quar
terback Jimmy Wright’s 16-yard pass in the end zone for
A&M’s second touchdown last Saturday night against Ar
kansas.
Kittens Close Season
Against Hearne Tonite
Consolidated’s Kittens close their
1956 gridiron activity tonight at
7:30 on Tiger Field, hosting the
Hearne Eaglets. Several injured
starters will be back in action for
tonight’s final skirmish.
Condy Pugh, Consolidated’s
fearsome fullback, enters the fray
with a 6.2 average from 73 carries
this football season, having cover
ed some 455 yards on the ground.
Speedy Ronnie Rea is second with
a 5.2 average from 49 attempts and
has. a total of 256 rushing yards.
The Kittens reached their sea-
