Reporting Women’s Events
In Capital Can Be Confusing

WASHINGTON <A>>—For those
of us who’ve been around for a
couple of administrations, covering’
afternoon ladies’ functions these
days can get a bit confusing. One
day you march down a receiving
line filled with wives of today’s
cabinet officials. The next day
you’re shaking hands with the wo
men whose husbands held the same
posts in the days of the preceding
administration.
There was Mrs. Fred Vinson,
widow of the late Chief Justice,
heading one receiving line and
introducing us to, Mrs. John R.
Steelman, wife of Truman’s White
House advisor, Mrs. Dean Acheson,
wife of the former secretary of
state, and Mrs. Jesse Donaldson,
wife of the Truman postmaster
general.
You also say hello to Nancy
Kefauver, wife of the Democratic
senator from Tennessee who wants
to be the next vice president, and
to pert Lindy Boggs, wife of Con
gressman Hale Boggs (D.-La.) who
heads up the Democratic congres
sional campaign committee. This
shindig was to honor Mrs. Edison
Dick of Chicago, co-chairman of
the National Volunteers for
Stevenson-Kefauver, The Ameri
can Newspaper Women’s Club
headquarters, where it was held,
was jam-packed.
Next day the same clubhouse
was equally jammed with women
wearing Ike buttons, Ike and Dick
insignia, and all kinds of GOP
jewelry. In the receiving line were
Mrs. Sherman Adams, wife of the
presidential assistant; Mrs. Arthur
Summerfield, wife of the post
master’ general; Mrs. Herbert
Brownell, wife of the attorney
general; Mrs. James Mitchell, wife
of the secretary of labor.
The meeting was conducted by
Mrs. Howai'd Coffin, Republican
National Committeewoman for the
District, and chairman of the wo
men’s division of the Eisenhower-
Nixon Campaign Club of the area.
Mrs. Adams brought four little
toy elephants she had sewed into
party garb—frilly white embroider
ed skirts, jeweled head - dresses,
corsages of tiny imitation flow
ers— to show the ladies. Doris
Brownell was wearing one of those
handsome gold link bracelets with
miniature music box studded with
rhinestones spelling “Ike.”
Most of the Democratic ladies
were wearing chic new fall dresses
in black. They were adorned with
“Adlai and Estes” jewelry and)
the honor guests wore rose car
nations. “We’re the poor man’s
party; we can’t afford orchids,”
one of them quipped.
