AGGIE TRI-CAPTAINS—Gene Stallings, Lloyd Hale and Jack Pardee will be starting
their third grid season under Coach Paul Bryant tomorrow against Villanova on Kyle
Field.
Sportswriters Choose Champs
Special to The Battalion
FORT WORTH—On the eve of
the 1956 football campaign, the
grid experts have “fingered” the
TCU Horned Frogs to repeat as
the Southwest Conference champ
ions.
In the 23rd annual poll of the
TCU Sports Seiwice, a record 143
sports writers and newscasters se
lected Coach Abe Martin’s vetemn
Purple as the most likely to suc
ceed. However, the Texas Aggies,
Baylor Bears and Texas Long
horns received substantial support
and were picked to finish in that
order.
Here’s the way it turned out:
TCU
A&M
TEXAS
BAYLOR
ARKANSAS
RICE
SMU
The Frogs, with a senior team
headed by All-America Jimmy
Swink, got 96 first-place nods out
of 143. They had 35 second-place
ballots. A&M got 20 firsts and
64 seconds while Baylor received
13 ballots for first and Texas five.
Giving one point for a first-
place selection, two for a second
and so on, TCU got 206% points.
The Aggies had 358, Texas 523,
Baylor 540 Vs, Arkansas. 665%,
Rice 846% and SMU 871%.
In the previous 22 polls, the
team picked to win the title has
done so only four times. Two
other favorites managed to get
ties.
Tigers Host
Rockdale at 8
Here Tonight

Consolidated High School’s Tig
ers play host to an undefeated, un
tied, unscored upon Rockdale elev
en tonight at 8 p.m. on Tiger field.
CHS Fullback Bill Kavanaugh pits
his ,239-yard clistrict rushing lead
against the defense-minded team.
Co-captains for the tilt are
Left Guard Garland Andrews
and Left Halfback Bill Hall.
Hall currently holds the dis
trict punting lead with a 35.6
average and is third in rush
ing with 115 yards.
The Tigers give up 10 pounds
per man and face the additional
threat of Rockdale’s Travis Walk
er, speedy 150-pound halfback.
Walker has already scored four
touchdowns in the still-young 1956
season in which Rockdale has
trounced Giddings 21-0 and Thorn-
dale 27-0.
Probable starting CHS lineup is:
Left End Dan Davis; Left Tackle
Mike Walton; Left Guard Garland
Andrews; Center David McNeely;
Right Guard J&mes Couch; Right
Tackle Pete Rodriguez; and Right
End Jim Wright.
Quarterback Alton Arnold; Left
Halfback Bill Hall; Right Half
back John Wayne Todd; and Full
back Bill Kavanaugh.

Hurt Sticks Neck Out—-Picks Baylor
By BARRY HART
Battalion Sports Editor
Realizing that only fools or foreigners attempt to pre
dict the Southwest Conference championship football race,
and being (I hope) in neither category, I will herein make
my world-shaking guess.
Here they are, in order:
Baylor
TCU Arkansas
A&M Rice
Texas SMU
It’s a long way back for the Bears’ last SWC title—
1924, in fact. To quote the old chiche “Always a bridesmaid
but never a bride” that’s Baylor, but not this year. They’re
loaded up at Waco and new Coach Sam Boyd is the last to
deny it.
Not since 1951, when the Bears went to the Orange Bowl,
has there been so much size, strength and experience. “That
good old Baylor line” is one of gigantic proportions, with 13
lettermen and half a dozen outstanding sophs. Of the 30
applying for jobs from tackle to tackle, 22 weigh 200 pounds
or over, and a sound Doyle Traylor looks like he’ll have the
kind of season he’s capable of.
As Coach Boyd says, “These kids have their heads set
on breaking the drouth.”

A FRIENDLY A
TAB E RNACLE S
The author of the 84th Psalm was a
great lover of the earthly habitations of
God. The temples, shrines and holy places
of Israel were his chief delight. He found
them friendly, inviting and comforting to
his soul.
In one of his moments of spiritual ec
stasy he broke forth in song: “How ami
able are thy tabernacles, O Lord of
hosts!” he sang. “My soul longeth, even
fainteth for the courts of the Lord.”
There are millions today who look upon
God’s earthly houses—the churches of the
land—in much the same way. They are
glad when the church hour comes and
they can mingle with others in worship
and spiritual fellowship.
The church around the corner or over
in the next block is not a cold and formal
place, once you come to know it. It
breathes friendliness and sympathy. It
comforts and inspires and points the way
to a kind and loving God.
Come to Church on Sunday and enjoy
the fellowship of God’s people.

THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
ALL FOR THE CHURCH
The Church rs the greatest fac
tor on earth for the building of
character and good citizenship. It
is a storehouse of spiritual values.
Without a strong Church, neither
democracy nor civilization can
survive. There are four sound
reasons why every person should
attend services regularly and sup
port the Church They are: (1)
For his own sake. (2) For his
children's sake. (3) For the sake
of his community and nation. (4)
For the sake of the Church itself,
which needs his moral and ma
terial support. Plan to go to
church regularly and read your
Bible daily.
