Tigers Meet Cleveland
Tomorrow Night at 8
By MAURICE OLTAN
With a posibility of having three
freshmen in the starting line-up,
the A&M Consolidated Tigers
travel to Cleveland tomorrow night
to blast the lid off the 1956 football
season. Game time is 8 PM.
When the Tigers take the field
for the opening kick-off, their line
up will probably look like this:
LE-Dan Davis, 145, senior; LT-
Mike Walton, 192, junior or Ben
Jackson, 135, freshman; LG-Gai'-
land Andrews, 160, senior; C-Stead-
man Davis, 156, junior; RG-David
McNeely, 154, junior; RT - Pete
Rodriguez, 152, sophomore; RE-
Jim Wright, 152, freshman; QB-
Alton A mold, 142, sophomore; LHB
Bill Hall, 146, senior; RHB-John
Martinez, 127, freshman; FB-Bill
Kavanaugh, 160, junior.
CHS has had one bit of actual
competition already this season,
having scrimmaged Hearne’s
Eagles last Thursday night on the
latter’s home gridiron. The Tigers
“held their own” against the Eagles
offensively, but the hosts looked
better on defense than did the Col
lege Station aggregation.
The fact that all of the Consoli
dated ti-oops came out of that ses
sion with no injuries must have
been especially pleasing to Head
Coach Horace Schaffer and Back-
field Coach Ed Logan after a couple
of their regulars were injured in
practice last week. In a pair of
freak accidents, quax'terback Edgar
Feldman received a cracked bone
in his foot while running backfield
plays and tackle Jimmy Murphrey
suffered a shoulder injury in a line
drill.
Feldman will be out for three
more weeks, and Murphrey will not
see action for at least six more
Dry Weather
Increases Wild
Forest Fires
The lack of rainfall during
1956 in East Texas has meant
a serious increase in the num
ber of wild forest fires and
the acreage of forest land
burned, according to J. O. Burn
side, head, Fire Control Depart
ment, Texas Forest Service, at
Lufkin. As of July 31 of this year,
2103 wildfires burned nearly 43,-
000 acres.
This, figure is compared to only
989 wildfires which burned only
11,345 acres for the same period
last year.
Unofficial figures from August
1 to August 28 show that there
have been about 570 wildfires
which burned an additional 7200
acres.
Rainfall figures taken at the
Texas Forest Service district head
quarters . located at Linden, Hen
derson, Lufkin, Woodville, Kirby-
ville, and Conroe show an average
at the six districts of only 22.42
inches of rain as of August 28 this
year. This compares with a ten
year average from 1946 to 1955 of
33.1 inches for the same period.
With the coming of the fall
burning season, all East Texas res
idents will need to be extremely
careful with fire. In addition, hunt
ers, fishermen, and campers from
other areas should be urged to
take every precaution with their
camp fires and smoking materials.

weeks and may be out for the en
tire season.
Coach Schaffer said that John
Wayne Todd, 150, sophomore, and
Dee Smith, 135, freshman, will see
plenty of service in the backfield
in the Cleveland fracas.
Co-captains for the Tigers for
tomorrow night, as will be the case
in every one of their games this
year, are to be Andrews and Hall.
They are the only two senior letter-
man on the squad.
Not meaning much towards the
opening* battle but perhaps very
important for future CHS success
is the “B” team being planned by
Coach Schaffer. He said that
chances for Consolidated’s first
such team being formed this year
are exti-emely good, as a total of
twenty prospective gridders met
with him yesterday to discuss that
matter.
Consolidated’s managers as is
true on most teams, usually do
their work without many people
knowing about it. For the Tigers
this season, John Harrington will
be head manager, with Jimmy Wal
ton and George Spurger serving as
assistants.
Head Yell Leader Ann Hite has
announced that a picnic supper and
yell practice will be held at Hensel
Park tonight at 6 PM for all CHS
students as well as anyone else
interested in the fortunes of the
local gridders. Ann, along with the
other yell leaders—Lucy Rogers,
Carolyn Wilson, and Jeanette Vance
—will try to help the Tigers get in
top shape mentally for tomorrow’s
clash.

the condition found when traveling down Nagle St. which runs beside the A&M Press

being traveled by a wise man—on foot.
