All ROTC Freshman—both army and air force—are eligible to com pete for membership, according to Sgt. M. T. Wilson, sponsor, in the tryouts which are held the latter part of September or first of October. , The original amount of appli cants are then singled down to 100 men—at which time the hard process starts. Within three days fifty cadets are thgn chosen on military bear ing, general sharpness, appearance and tact. The 42 regular members and eight alternates are chosen after six weeks of observance by Sgt. Wilson. The alternates always have a chance to make the regular team. A team commander, right guide and guidon bearer are chosen to lead the group. Last semester the Drillers appear ed at Galveston Splash Day festivi ties, Houston Armed Forces Day parade, Fiesta Flambeau in San Antonio, which is also known as the Battle of the Flowers. The Team members were sched uled to appear at the Cherry Blos som meet in Washington D. C. and at Purdue University in Indiana but bad weather in those areas ruled out the trips. Competeing in the Area H Drill Meet with schools from Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas and New Mexico last .spring, found the Freshman Drill Team placing sec ond. A formal banquet is held fol lowing this annual meet at the school which sponsors it. The Team usually performs at least five times during the year. Participation at campus activities includes a five minute drill at the end of pass-bys and occasionally at the Final Review. Dress consists of Class A uni form with white helmet liner, leg gings, gloves and scarves. All transportation, whether bus or plane, to out of town meets is furnished by the Air Force and when meets require over - night stays, quarters are furnished at Air Force installations. “We have been assured of several trips for the Fall and Spring semesters,” said Wilson. The ’56-’57 team members will be chosen this Fall by Sgt. Wilson, Col. Henry Dittman, Lt. Col. William J. Hall, M/Sgt. D. D. Christensen and M/Sgt. Thomas H. Williams. “When the team appears out of town, they are given excused absences,” says Sgt. Wilson, “and always, with an opportunity to make them up.” WELCOME AGGIES.
