Burgess not only has interests
of a mechanical nature, but he is
also quite interested in table tennis.
While still young he spent much
of his time playing tennis and table
tennis in his hometown, St. Louis.
“When the table tennis tables
were placed in the Memorial Stu
dent Center I was constantly try
ing to find someone to play with
me,” he said. “I could usually
beat whomever I played then but
now I can’t seem to win as easily.”
At one time back in St. Louis,
Burgess won a title in the sport.
Burgess came to A&M in 1948
and became head of the industrial
engineering department in 1951.
He was born and reared in St.
Louis and was graduated from
Washington University there in
1933. He now lives at 402 W. Dex

wife and one daughter, age three.
Boxer Virgil Akins says the on
ly time he was knocked unconscious
was when he was kicked in the
head by a horse.
