Swims in NCAA Finals
Okamoto in Nationals
A & M ’ s sophomore swimming
sensation, Tetsuo Okamoto, carries
the Maroon and White into the
NCAA finals tomorrow, Friday and
Saturday at New Haven, Conn., in
his specialty, the 1500 meters.
Coach Art Adamson and his prize
pupil left Tuesday by plane for the
national finals which will be held
at Yale University.
Okamoto smashed two records
as he led the Aggies to their rec
ord-breaking sweep of the South
west Conference swim champion
ship two weeks ago in Austin.
Okamoto got under the old 1500
meter mark by 27.1 seconds, easily
winning with a tremendous 19:21.6
and captured the 440-yard free
style event with a record time of
4:51.6, eclipsing the old standard
by 2.2 seconds.

Longhorns for honors in 1944.
A&M has never placed a man in
the NCAA finals, but Okamoto has
perhaps the best chance to place of
any Aggie entrant. As a school
boy, Okamoto swam to third place
in the 1500-meters representing
Brazil in the 1952 Olympics.
The SWC voted to allow A&M to
pai*ticipate in the NCAA finals, by
passing the conference ban on post
season tournaments or games for
the Aggies.
Ohio State University and Yale
University, perennial swimming
powers in the nation, will again
battle for national honors, with the
Ivy League team getting the favor
ites nod.
Two Aggie Bowling Club teams
will compete with 83 class “B”
teams from throughout the state
at a tournament to be held in
Wichita Falls April 7 and 8.
For the second consecutive year
A&M has the only college teams
entered.
