1 Page 4 THE BATTALION Wednesday, March 28, 1956 Swims in NCAA Finals Okamoto in Nationals A & M ’ s sophomore swimming sensation, Tetsuo Okamoto, carries the Maroon and White into the NCAA finals tomorrow, Friday and Saturday at New Haven, Conn., in his specialty, the 1500 meters. Coach Art Adamson and his prize pupil left Tuesday by plane for the national finals which will be held at Yale University. Okamoto smashed two records as he led the Aggies to their rec ord-breaking sweep of the South west Conference swim champion ship two weeks ago in Austin. Okamoto got under the old 1500 meter mark by 27.1 seconds, easily winning with a tremendous 19:21.6 and captured the 440-yard free style event with a record time of 4:51.6, eclipsing the old standard by 2.2 seconds. Two Ag Bowling Teams To Enter State Tourney The Sao Paula, Brazil, splasher also finished second behind SMU’s Pedro Galvoa in the 220-yard free style race as the Aggies garnered a new high of 142 points to Texas’ 91%, SMU’s 90% and Rice’s 12. A&M has never placed a man in the NCAA finals, but Okamoto has perhaps the best chance to place of any Aggie entrant. As a school boy, Okamoto swam to third place in the 1500-meters representing Brazil in the 1952 Olympics. The SWC voted to allow A&M to pai*ticipate in the NCAA finals, by passing the conference ban on post season tournaments or games for the Aggies. Ohio State University and Yale University, perennial swimming powers in the nation, will again battle for national honors, with the Ivy League team getting the favor ites nod. Two Aggie Bowling Club teams will compete with 83 class “B” teams from throughout the state at a tournament to be held in Wichita Falls April 7 and 8. For the second consecutive year A&M has the only college teams entered. C-AAA Nudges A-Field 10-9 In Softball Go New York • Toronto Walter Hunter scored twice for a victorious jC-AAA soft- ball team in yesterday’s 10-9 encounter with F-FA. Alex ander Mcllheran was the top scorer for the Artillery freshman with two trips around the diamond. Don Griffin scored once for the AAA team and reached second and third on two other occasions, Ray Burns and John Raus added one run each to the winning total. The 25th annual tournament is sponsored by the Texas State Bowling Association, Inc., and will be held at the Spudder Bowling Alleys in Wichita Falls. Teams are made up of Clay Mc Farland, John Redden, A1 Mc Clellan, John Geiger, and Marvin Butler on the first team. Fred McDonald, Floyd Hardiman, Mart in Pursch, Ken Savage, and Joe Blieden on the second team. ST. A&M Golf Course To Be Resodded The A&M Golf Course will be re sodded this summer, according to Joe Fagan, manager of the course. The greens will be sodded with three new tropical bermuda grass es, proven suited for this climate. Fagan said the course is in excel lent condition now and that more people are playing golf every day. In other freshman softball games A-Composite trounced A-AAA, 13- 2; Squadron 22 downed Sqd. 10, 8-3; A-Infantry edged Sqd. 23, 9-6; D-Inf. defeated Sqd. 14, 11-8; C- Armor blasted Sqd. 8, 18-3; D-FA outscored A-Chemical, 10-5; Sqd. 15 nosed A-TC, 10-9; Sqd. 8 rout ed Maroon Band, 18-9; and D-FA blasted B-FA, 18-9. In Civilian softball Milner out played College View A, 10-2, and Law Hall edged Dorm 16, 13-12. Squadi*on 18 defeated B-Compos- ite in freshman volleyball. Sqd. 21 blanked Sqd. 1 in another volley ball tussle and Sqd. 4 downed Sqd. 13 in another shutout.
