ents the Aggies ran up the highest

A&M Pistol Team
In Austin Tourney
The A&M pistol team plans to
send six of its top members to the
Austin Rifle Club’s annual spring
tournament in Austin Saturday
and Sunday, according to Col.
Henry L. Philips, team sponsor.

Tetsuo Okamoto led A&M’s as
sault on the record book, placing
new marks in the 1,500-meters and
the 440-yard freestyle races. The
brilliant sophomore from Brazil
splashed to an amazing 19:21.6 in
the 1,500-meters Thursday eclips
ing the old record by 27.1 seconds.
Okamoto bettered the old 440 re
cord of 4:53.8 by 2.2 seconds with
his 4:51.6 on Saturday and also
placed second in the 220-yard free
style behind SMU’s Pedro Galvao,
who set three records himself.
A&M’s Dick Weick broke his
own year-old record in the 200-
yard breaststroke with a 2:34.6,
2.8 seconds faster than the one he
set in 1955.
The Aggie medley relay team of
Norman Ufer, Gayle Klipple and
Dick Hunkier surpassed their 1955
record by seven seconds s racing to
a first with a 2:55.9 clocking.
SMU’s Galvao broke thi'ee re
cords in the three events he enter
ed, the 220-yard freestyle, the 100-
yard brackstroke and the 200-yard
individual medley.
Hunkier, besides anchoring the
A&M’s record-breaking medley re
lay’ team, swam to first in both the
50 and 100-yard freestyle races, to
repeat his 1955 victories.
The Aggies ran away with the
200-yard butterfly with Weick,
Klipple and Jerry Mount captur
ing the first three places.
A&M gained a place in each
of the fourteen events with Jose
Merino and Rip Woodard placing
second and fifth respectively be
hind Okamoto in the 1,500-meters.
Woodard also took second in the
200 backstroke and the 200 indiv
idual medley.
Unbeaten Cadet Wrestlers
Will Enter NCAA Finals
Coach Jim Griffith’s unbeaten
varsity and freshmen wrestlers
swept all but one event here last
weekend to capture the Southwest
Collegiate Wrestling Tourney and
earn the right to compete in the
NCAA finals at Oklahoma A&M
Friday and Saturday.
The Aggie varsity won the
championship easily, piling up 46
points, while the Cadet freshmen
came in second with 14 points. The
University of Texas entry placed
third with 12 and Houston fourth
with 8. Rice and Baylor, the other
two entrants in the meet held in
DeWare Field House failed to
gain a point.
Copping first places for the vic
torious Aggies were A1 Clachar,
Don Burchard, Don Schoenfeld, Ken
Jones, John Watson, Carlton Hazel
wood and Zaoh Hill.
Coach Griffith plans to take sev
en Cadets to the NCAA finals this
weekend, including Marvin Ansley,
Hazelwood, Clachai-, Burchard,
Watson, Schoenfeld, and Hill.
