Burchard, head of the Journalism Department, was elected president of the faculty division of the Southwestern Jour nalism Congress Saturday a t Southern Methodist University. Other officers include Dr. Wil liam J. Thomas, Baylor Univer sity, vice-president; and Dr. War ren K. Agee, Texas Christion Uni versity, secretary. Joe Tindel, sophomore journal ism major here, was elected presi dent of the Southwestern Student Press Club, the student branch of the Congress. David McPherson, Hardin-Simmons University and J. B. Cue, Oklahoma A&M were elected vice-president and secre tary. The Director of Student Publications is Ross Strader. The governing body of all student publications of the A.&M. College of Texas is the Student Publications Board. Faculty members are Karl E. Elmquist, Chairman; Donald D. Burchard, Tom Leland and Bennie Zinn. Student members are Derrell H. Guiles, Paul Holladay, and Wayne Moore. Ridings, Dallas, re ceived a $400 cash award, plus tui tion to a maximum of $500, from the Socony Mobil Oil Company, selected by the company from a list of three students nominated by the Petroleum Engineering Depart ment. Included in this award was a gift of $400 to the department. Joe A. Marek, Victoria and Lar ry D. Piper, Brownwood, received the George P. Mitchell Scholarship award of petroleum engineering handbooks with their names en graved, for being selected by the department faculty as outstanding junior petroleum engineering stu dents. A new award of $150 established by George P. Mitchell, to a petro leum engineering faculty member selected by the dean of engineer ing, went to Robert L. Whiting, head of the department.
