Page 8 THE BATTALION Thursday, February 2, 1956 Texas Called Minor League In Leathers One of the greatest cattle producing areas of the world, the state of Texas, is a minor league operator in the leather supply industry, according to a survey of the state recently com pleted by research economists at the Texas Engineering- Experiment Station. A review of the Texas leather in dustry shows that tanneries of the state can supply less than 2 per cent of the grain leather needed by Texas manufacturers of shoes, bags, billfolds and other leather articles. In 1954 Texas manufacturers of leather products used approximate ly $8,500,000 worth of grain leath er. Of this amount 98 per cent came from sources outside the state, according to James R. Brad ley, assistant research economist of the Experiment Station. Bradley believes the grain leather market in Texas and the Southwest is now large enough to encoui’age a large tannei’y opera tion in the state, to take advantage of this market outlet, and to save transportation costs. To ship 100 pounds of tanned leather from Bos ton to Dallas, his report shows, costs $4.99; ft'om Milwaukee to Dallas the freight on the same weight is $3.37. Bradley believes large tannery operation in Texas is feasible because of the hides supply and tremendous Saving in freight costs to Texas manufactur ing concerns.
