Third In SWC Scoring
‘Spider* Helping
A&M Spin Wins
By BARRY HART
Assistant Sports Editor
Georg-e (Spider) Mehaffey,
the wild Irishman of A&M,
stands third in Southwest
Conference scoring- with 88
points, but “is his own worst
enemy,” according - to Coach Ken
Loeffler.
“There’s only one thing worse
than a wild Irishman,” smiled
Loeffler, “and that’s tlmee calm
Ihitchmen,” referring to Mehaf-
fey’s occasional bursts of wild, un
controlled basketball.
“George is quick and fast and
gets better every day,” says Coach
Loeffler of his 6-4 point-maker.
“He’s lasting longer in games too
—he used to foul out on defense,
now we’ve got him so he just fouls
out on offense.”
Mehaffey, dubbed “Spider” by
his teammates, currently leads the
Aggies in the scoring department
in both the conference and season
rankings. His 186 points places him
ninth in the SWC season totals for
a 13.3 average. Although not a
skyscraper in height, George has
plucked 53 important rebounds off
the boards to pace A&M in that
department through five conference
games.
Mehaffey’s 28 points in the Ag
gies’ 77-89 loss to the Rice Owls
stands as his personal high on the
season and his 35 points in the pre
conference tournament won him
second-team all-tourney honors in
Houston.
“Mehaffey has all the reactions
of a good basketball playerj” says
Loeffler, “and only needs to control
his natural wildness to become a
really fine player.”
The Houston Junior, a graduate
of St. Thomas High where he
earned a berth on the Catholic all-
state quintet his senior year, Me
haffey meshed 156 points last year
to take second place among A&M
scorers with a 13-point average.
On the season George dunked 268
points through the hoop to stand
third among the Aggies.
Wild or not, it’s a fact that
George Mehaffey is one of the out
standing hardwood performers in
the SWC.

Here Tonight at 8 p.m.
GEORGE (SPIDER) MEHAFFEY is currently third
among - Southwest Conference scorers with 88 points in
five g'ames, an average of nearly 18 points per game. He
also paces the Cadet point makers in season scoring with
186.

Battalion Sports Editor
Favored for the first time this season, the Aggies collide
with Sam Houston’s stubborn Bearkats tonight in White Col
iseum.
The 8 p.m. game finds the Cadets meeting their oldest
cage foe. A&M and Sam Houston first met on the basketball
court in 1913, the Aggies’ first season, with the Bearkats
absorbing a 72-9 beating.
Taking time out from the hotly-contested Southwest
Conference race, A&M enters tonight’s battle with a 2-3 rec
ord against loop teams. Over the season the Cadets have
registered four wins while losing 10. A&M is fourth in SWC
standings, one game back of Rice’s Owls
“We’ll start with George 4
Mehaffey, Fritzie Connallv
Ken Plutto, Roger Harvey, Bill
Brophv—and a prayer to
night,” grinned Aggie mentor
Ken Loeffler.
Though Sam Houston’s 3-11 sea
son record is not impressive, the
Bearkats have not been badly beat
en in any game so far. Last Tues
day night — the Kats lost to a
strong East Texas State quint, 51-
66, to suffer their sixth straight
Lone Star Conference setback.
The Huntsville Kats will probab
ly pit a starting five of A1 Adams,
Monte Driskell, Lawrence Rich
ards, Carl Davis and Glenn Jochec
against the Aggies tonight.
In the 63 game series between
the two schools A&M has managed
to win 47. The two teams last met
in 1951, the year the Aggies shared
the SWC championship with TCU
and Texas, and the Cadets won
twice, 40-36 and 50-45.
Three Aggie basketeers are
among the ten top scorers in the
SWC at present. Mehaffey, Hutto
and Brophy rank third, foui'th and
seventh respectively.
Mehaffey leads the Aggies with
186 points over the season, and 88
in league games. Hutto is close
behind in SWC action with 75
markers.
The Aggies play host to Texas
Christian Saturday night in White
Coliseum, returning to conference
warfare.
Aggie Gridders
To Open Drills
February 20th
February 20th is the date
set for the opening of A&M’s
annual football spring train
ing. The drills will be staged
earlier this year than in the
past to enable some of the players
to participate in track and baseball.
The Aggies, boasting 24 return
ing lettermen, have possibly been
hurt less by graduation than any
Southwest Conference school. The
entire first-team returns entact for
the 1956 grid season.
‘We’ll use the split-T formation
again next year, but with a little
more variation,” said Coach Raul
Bear Bryant.
Of the returning lettermen three
were named to first-unit all-SWC
teams across the state, and at least
five others were placed on the
second team.
Arkansas Five
Leading SWC
Cage Teams
Arkansas’ battling Razor-
backs, who a month ago would
have been conceded little
chance of stepping into the
first division, leaped into the
top spot of the Southwest Confei*-
ence cage race this week.
The Hogs won their fourth
straight SWC victory without de
feat last Monday night against
A&M, 98-66. SMU’s co-favored
Mustangs hold down the No. 2 pos
ition with a perfect 3-0 slate. High
ly-rated Rice is third with 3-2.
