Trying desperately to keep up with the Ponies’ radar like barrage, A&M tied the score at 44-44 with 16 minutes left in the game, but a succession of fouls and field goals en abled SMU to pull away to its highest scoring output of the season. SMU, led by 6-3 Larry Showalter and big 6-6 Tom Miller, registered 57 points in the final period. The Ponies hit 20 of 36 shots from the field in the 55 per cent average. ♦ Showalter, junior guard, led the Mustang scoring parade with 24 points, high for the night. The Ponies also dominated the backboards, doubling the Aggies in rebounds with 36. SMU got the opening tip-off and guard Bobby Mills dropped in a free throw to put SMU out in front. Ken Hutto’s two free throws gave the Aggies a 2-1 lead seconds later, the only time A&M led during the contest. The Cadets knotted the score three times in the first period, but the deadly accuracy of Showalter, who dunked 14 points in the initial stanza, enabled the Mustangs to leave the court at intermission with a 40-32 lead. George Mehaffey sparked A&M’s second half rally, but left the second half for a remarkable Bill Brophy, who had 11 points, fouled out minutes later and SMU began to walk away with the game. SMU’s biggest lead of the night, except for the final score, was 28 points. Senior John Fortenberry w a s the leading Aggie marksman of the night with 18 points.
