Page 4 THE BATTALION Thursday, December 15, 1955 Fish Nose Out Kittens, 73-68 By BARRY HART Assistant Sports Editor Down by as much as 10 points mid-way through the second half, the Aggie Fish turned on the speed to edge Houston’s Kittens, 73-68, in a hard-fought thriller last night in White Coliseum. Led by the terrific shooting of Puerto Rico’s Gonzalo Diago, who got 14 of his 17 points in the last 12 minutes, the Fish came from a 46-5(5 deficit with 12:02 left in the game to pull even 64-64, at the 8- minute mark. A&M went ahead to stay in the final two minutes. Dia- go dropped in 10 of 11 free throw attempts during this time. Diago started turning the tide with two free throws and J i m McNichol and Stew Heller made it 52-56 with two quick field goals. Bill Walling, the game’s high point man with 31, hit a jump shot and free throw for Houston to give the Kittens a 59-52 lead as Heller fouled out with 10:16 left. McNichol drew his fifth personal seconds later and left the game. But Diago dropped in two more gratis shots and Victoria’s Neal Swisher, the only Texan in the Fish starting lineup, brought the crowd to life on an easy lay-up off the fast break to make the score, 56-59. Immediately after a Houston time out, Diago drew two more complimentary shots and posted both on the scoreboard to pull the first-year Aggies to within one Mcrm I'iiri ■:>1 ma- May your Christmas be as warm NH* as an old friend’s greetings/ Mr. and Mrs. “L-ou” BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD KATES One day ‘U per word It/- per word each additional day Minimum charge—40^ DEADLINES 5 p.m. day before publication Classified Display 80r telephoned so as to arrive in the Office of Student Publications (207 Goodwin, 4-5324, hours 8 - 12, 1 - 5, dally Monday through Friday) at or before the deadline of 1 p.m. of the day preceding publica tion .—Director. Bob Clark tallied for the Kittens, however, and Diago had to do it again a minute later as his two free throws moved the score to 60-61. Walling was awarded two free throws. He made his first and the second was tipped in by Clark, and Houston pulled away by four, 64-60. Diago hit a two-handed jump shot from the left corner and Alex Roberts one in seconds later as the Fish pulled even. Swisher ^it a hook shot to give A&M a brief lead, but Walling got the tie back on a jump shot. Roberts fouled out with two minutes left and Houston’s Boyter pushed in both his free shots to give the Kittens their last lead, 68-66. Erwin Turner registered a beautiful jump shot to tie it up and Jack Schwake plucked off a Houston rebound, dribbled the length of the court, and netted a layup to put the Fish ahead to stay, 70-68. Appropriately, Diago meshed the last points of the game as he dumped in a layup, was fouled in the attempt. He hit the bucket with 14 seconds remaining to make the final score read 73-68. Heller popped in a jump shot in the opening minute to lead off the night’s scoring and followed with a tip in, but Walling and Clark fired the Kittens into an early 10- 4 lead. Swisher and Heller pulled A&M into a 10-10 deadlock at the 12 min ute mark, but Houston pulled away and the Fish were behind the re mainder of the first half. At one time the Kittens led by 25-17 and held a 37-33 margin at the inter mission. Swisher chalked up 18 points to lead the Fish scorers and brought his season total to 34 points, a 17- point average. !iil ■ mm.,, ;/■» • v p • 1 ‘ * | • i g H m f Ht » m- « 'iMIjk ill IsliS ■■■ ■ . - gl *.<1 ■> 'A Ife /.-wmail IPlk itiplti I GO MAN!
