A&M scored 86 points against Pepper- dine last year to set the all-time high scoring record for an Aggie cage team. FORTENBERRY, a sharpshoot ing senior from No. Little Rock, Ark.j was the game’s top marks man with seven field goals and five free throws for a total of 19. Bill Brophy, also a senior, was next in line on the Aggie quintet with 15 points. HOW ABOUT THAT? Officials: Foerster and Shelton. Rebounds: A&M 54, Tulane 61. Free throws missed: Bilbrey 2, Connally 2, Brophy 5, Fortenberry 1, Stoll 1, Murphy 5. Sqd. 1 Captures Tennis Crown Squadron 1 captured the upper classmen tennis championship yes terday by defeating White Band, 2-1. Raymond Snover and Gary Lemmon downed Paul Prasek and Cecil Steward 6-4 in Sqd. 1’s eas iest set. John Dillard and David Carpenter took an 8-6 set from David Graham and Gerry Parker to win the intramural title. Eddie Reed and John Greenwalt were the big guns for the White Band, defeating Danny Gansky and Robert Beal in a 7-5 match. Mighty A-Armor advanced to the Class B football finals by de feating B-AAA 18-13 in a hard fought game featured by penalties, disqualifications, shifty runners and stout defensive play. In the first half Phil Gratehouse intercepted a B-AAA aerial and rambled from the mid-field stripe all the, way to the 5-yard line. The AAA defense rallied, however, and on three attempts the Armor of fense was shoved back to the 16 where Jackie Harris salvaged the situation by placing a beautiful field goal for a 3-0 lead. ROY HENRY PONTIAC CO. Hearne, Texas Now The Great . . . ‘KEN L0EFFLER on BASKETBALL” “Get ’em At LOU’S Mehaffey, who sat out Saturday night’s game with a Charley horse, entered the game with six min utes to go in the first half and sparked A&M’s aggressive attack in the final period. The 6-4 Hou- ton junior peppered Tulane bas kets with 14 points—all of them in the second half. Twice he stole the ball and scored on easy crip shots. “That boy Mehaffey turned the tide quickly I’d say,” voiced Tulane Coach Cliff Wells. “As- soon as he got in there they seemed to catch fire. He really hurt us.” THE LEAD CHANGED hands nine times during the turbulent first half before Brophy’s free throw with 6:20 to go shoved A&M out in front, 30-29. Tulane knotted the score at 35-35, but Fortenberry dunked a free throw seconds later to make it 36-35. The Aggies left the court at halftime leading 40-37. Clever Ken Loeffler’s basketeers began the second half of play in businesslike fashion, and quickly pulled out of the Greenies’ reach. A&M held 20 point leads frequent ly during the last seven minutes of the contest. “Loeffler is a great coach,” said Coach Wells. “Did you see him change his defense from a man- for-man to a zone the minute he saw we weren’t able to hit from the outside.” The Aggies host the University of Houston’s tall, high-scoring Cougars tomorrow night at 8. The freshmen game begins at 6:30 p.m. TOO LATE to prevent Aggie guard John Fortenberry from laying in a two-pointer is Tulane’s Stan Stumpf, forward for the Green Wave. P^ortenberry was second high-scorer in last night’s A&M win over Tulane, 85-66. The win was the second straight for the resurging Aggies, and repre sents the longest Aggie winning streak in the history of White Coliseum.
