After Beating Yeguara
Tigers Lose Pair
To Bellville Five
By MAURICE OLIAN
CHS Sports Correspondent
A&M Consolidated’s Tigers, after
downing Somerville in a 32-31
thriller for their first win of the
season last Friday, tasted double
defeat for the second time last
night at the hands of the Bellville
Brahmas, 42-36 and 33-22.
Led by Norman Floeck, an all
district performer last year, who
garnered 19 points to cop scoring
honors for the night, the Tigers
built a 27-19 lead midway in the
third period only to see it disinte
grate before an 11-point onslaught
by the Brahmas, who took a 30-27
lead at the end of the third quarter.
CONSOLIDATED led at the end
of the first half, 22-17, as Floeek
meshed one from under the basket
just as the buzzer sounded ending
play. This was the Tigers’ largest
margin of the half.
Floeck pushed in two free throws
to give CHS their last lead, 35-33,
in the final period, but Bellville
hit for three quick field goals while
holding the Tigers scoreless to
make it 41-35 in the final minutes.
The Tiger “B” team practiced
Monday afternoon as they were
not scheduled to play, but when
the Brahmas showed up with their
“B” squad ready to play, the Ti
gers consented but went down to
their second defeat.
PACED BY Floeck and Manuel
Garcia, another all-district choice
in 54-55, who netted 30 of Consoli
dated’s 32 points, the Tigers fought
to a one-point victory over the
Somerville Yeguars. Floeck had
#
(/
16 points and Garcia hit for 14.
To the highly enthusiastic ap
preciation of a large crowd, the
Tigers “raked the board clean”
against their taller opponents.
Thanks mainly to their hustle, es
pecially in the first half, Consoli
dated gathered 23 rebounds to the
Yeguar’s 15.
Garcia started the scoring with
a lay-up and the Tigers broke a
6-6 tie midway in the first period
to take a lead that was never re
linquished.
AFTER LEADING, 22-14, at the
half Consolidated gained their larg
est lead during the third, 24-14,
but the Yeguars whittled it to 28-
23 going into the final period.
With 6:30 left Somerville pulled
to 28-27. Garcia hit two free
throws, but the Yeguars scored to
make it 30-29 with 1:45 remaining.
Floeck meshed a set shot for a
32-29 lead and Malcolm Griffin,
the Yeguars high point man, ended
the scoring with two free shots.

Woodruff, was finishing his sixth
year and had a five-year contract
to go. He had held the dual posi
tion of athletic director-head coach.
Boyd, end coach of the Golden
Bears, is one of the most famous
names in Baylor football annals.
He was half of the great passing
combination of Billy Patterson-to-
Sam Boyd that made history in the
1938 season.
Sauer himself was surprised by
the announcement that he was to
be athletic director only and Boyd
was to succeed him. When asked
about the report this afternoon,
he said there would be no an
nouncement until he had conferred
with Dr. W. R. White, Baylor presi
dent, several hours later.

MEMPHIS—Trailing by only one
point at halftime, the fast im
proving Aggies couldn’t match
Memphis State’s high scoring Ti
gers last night and took it on the
chin for the third straight time
this season, 84-71.
A&M threatened consistently
during the first half, but Mem
phis State pulled away finally with
11 minutes left in the game. The
Tigers held a slim 42-41 lead at
halftime.
Sophomore Fritizie Connally,
who’s also A&M’s top high jumper
during the track season, was the
Aggie’s top scorer with six field
goals and five free throws for a
total of 17. Connally fouled out
late in the second half.
Three other Aggies, Bill Brophy,
John Fortenberry and George Me-
haffey got into the double figures
column. Brophy, A&M’s leading
point maker last season, dunked 12
points, while Fortenberry and Me-
haffey netted 12 and 14 respec
tively.
Memphis State’s Ken Caldwell
was the game’s top sharp shooter
with 31 points. Caldwell hit nine
field goals and 13 free throws.
A&M managed to hit 23 out of
the 60 times they shot at the bas
ket for a respectable 38.3 per cent.
Memphis State was a little better,
connecting on 29 of their 73 tries
for 39.7 per cent.
The game marked the end of the
Aggies, three game tour. Coach
Ken Loeffler’s crew improved their
scoring punch considerably over an
opening 43-48 loss to Tulsa.
Three Aggies are listed on the
All-Time Cotton Bowl roster. They
are Martin Ruby, tackle; Charles
Henke, guard; and John Kim
brough, fullback.
