Ancient Rivalry
A&M, the team voted most
likely not to succeed, goes af
ter its first Southwest Con
ference championship in 15
years Thursday when it meets
the University of Texas on Kyle
Field.
The ancient rivalry, oldest in
conference history, dates back to
1894. Texas has a long’ lead with
40 wins to 16 for A&M and five
ties. The Cadets have managed
only one win over the Longhorns
in the past 15 years. They eased
past the Steers 22-21 in 1951 on
Kyle Field.
A&M will be favored for the
first time in 14 years, but a glance
at by-gone years shows that past
records don’t mean anything at all
when these two teams come to
gether on Thanksgiving Day.
“I don’t know whether we’re up
or not. We’d better be though,
I’ll tell you that,” said Coach Paul
Bryant in answer to a question
about his team’s spirit yesterday.
“If we don’t win it’ll be the saddest
Thanksgiving around here in a long
time.”
Fifteen Texas players, including
such key men as Johnny Tatum,
Herb Gray, Delano Womack, Men-
an Schriewer, Bob Tucker, Pat
Tolar, Joe Youngblood and Chester
Simcik have never been beaten by
an Aggie team.
If Texas should stage one of the
upsets for which the Turkey Day
classic is noted, TCU would wind-

up with the championship if they
win over SMU next Saturday.
“This Gray is the best lineman
I saw last year. Of course that’s
my own opinion,” said Coach Bry
ant.
Coach Willie Zapalac, who scout
ed the Longhorns against TCU and
SMU heartily agreed with Bryant.
“Herb Gray is by far the best line
man in the conference. Tatum is
no slouch either. Fondren? He’ll
break your back if you don’t watch
out.”
“Remember, everything is for
gotten in this ball game. I know,”
said Zapalac, who played on the
1941, 1942 and 1946 Aggie elev
ens.
Jack Pardee, A&M’s line-smash
ing fullback, continues to hold
down the fifth spot among SWC
ball carriers this week, and first
on the Aggie squad. Pardee has
ground out 438 yards on 78 car
ries and has a 5.6 yards per-try
average.
Bantam Bill Dendy is third in
the conference in punt returns with
a 10.3 average on eight runbacks.
Loyd Taylor is fifth in scoring with
31 points and third in extra-point
kicking with 13 out of 15.

TEXAS GAINS—Shorthorn quarterback Vince Matthews
faked a pass and picked up eight yards in the second quar
ter of last Saturday’s game at Austin. He was tackled by
an unidentified Fish footballer. The Yearlings won it,
13-0.
A&M’s previously unbeaten cross
country team lost the Southwest
Conference championship to the
University of Texas for the second
straight year in Austin yesterday,
being downed by the Longhorns,
32-41. Arkansas took third with
58 points and SMU placed fourth
with 83.
The Aggies had defeated the
Texas team three times in earlier
meets, but as was the case last
year, the Longhoms had it when it
counted.
“I believe the difference was the
fact that we ran on their home
course,” said head track coach
Frank Anderson. “We had no par
ticular letdown, but they were a
little more fired up and ready to
go than we were.”
A&M was undefeated up to the
conference meet last year when
Verlon Westmoreland, who hadn’t
failed to place lower than second
all season, became ill and fell to
tenth and the Aggies lost to Texas
by two points.
Captain Bill Cocke, who had been
beaten only once this year, placed
third behind Arkansas’ Edward
Morton and Texas’ Walter McNew.
Order of finishers: Morton,
SMU; McNew, UT; Cocke, A&M;
Bob Nieman, outfielder for the
Chicago White Sox, led the Texas
League in hitting in 1951.
Forester, UT; Earl Bond, Ark.; 1 Wilmsen, A&M; Fidell Rul, A&M;
Bob Boles, A&M; Keith Pitner, Bob Hanson, UT; Albert Bartek,
UT; Bob Crawford, UT; Carl I SMU; Ed Blake, A&M.
