The player was Louis Crow, Powell’s uncle, who gave him the needed encouragement and incentive to try for the junior high team. Jack made the squad that year and went on to letter two years for Waco High School. Although not an all-district or all-state performer in high school, Jack’s consistent effort and ability to learn gained him a varsity letter behind Larry Winkler in 1953. Scholastically ineligible in 1954 Powell won the starting right tackle job on the basis of a brilliant showing during Spring drills. Hardiman Cureton, UCLA’s co-captain and All-American tackle, paid the .218-pound Junior a fine tribute after the game when he said, “The guy I played in front of (Powell) was as BICYCLE REPAIRS Student Co-op Store N. With first down in A&M’s 38 Jack broke through the vaunted Bruin line to drop Ronnie Knox for no gain, and on the next play was instru mental, along with a number of other Aggies, in putting left end John Hermann out of the game during a scramble for Knox’s sti’ay latex-al. “Powell played an outstanding game against UCLA,” Coach Bry ant, usually not one quick to praise, said after the hard-fought defeat. Don’t be surprised if more peo ple aren’t heaping praise on hard hitting Jack Powell before he fin ishes his football career at Texas A&M. Ag T eachers Attend Workshop Meet An expected 540 vocational agri culture teachers in Texas will at tend one of the 27 workshop meet ings to be held over the state this year, according to the Agricultural Education Department. Conducted by R. N. Craig of the Agricultural Education Depart ment, these meetings will be on the subject of farm shop. They will be held at district meetings of the vocational agriculture teachers for one day. The courses will vary with sub jects such as organizing a farm shop instructional program, fitting and using hand tools, demonstrat ing skills in the farm shop, and organizing instructional programs in welding. Need for the wox-kshops is caused by the continuing progress in mechanization and their resulting demands by farmers and high sphool students in agriculture. DYERf'FUR STORAGE HATTERS Students . . .
