CHS Tigers
Try Hempstead
Tn Op
SPECIALS FOR THUR. - FRI. - SAT. - SEPT. 8-9-10
ener
A&M Consolidated’s Tigers
open the local grid season Fri
day when they tangle with
Hempstead’s Bobcats at 8
p.m. on the new Tiger Field.
A top-notch game is expected,
as the Bobcats lost only one start
er from last year’s eleven and the
Tigers looked good in a three-way
scrimmage with Rockdale and La-
Grange last Thursday.
Consolidated whipped the Hemp
stead team 14-0 last year. In 1953
CHS took them 33-0 and they tied
6-6 in 1952, when they tied for
the district title.
Consolidated coach Horace Schaf
fer has announced offense starters
as follows: Norman Floeck, L. E.;
Dick Hickman, L.T.; Garland An
drews, L.G.; Steadman Ddvis, Cen
ter; Jack McNeely, R.G.; Ed Lin
ton, R.T.; Manuel Garcia, R.E.;
Edgar Feldman, QB; Bobby Witch
er, L.H.; Bill Hall, R.H.; and Bill
Kavanaugh, FB.
On defense, Alfred Linton, Don
ald Vaughn and Wayne Thompson
will replace Davis, Witcher and
Feldman.
A picnic and yell practice for
all Tiger suppbrters will be held
at 6:30 tonight at the old Tiger
Field. Claire Rogers, head yell
leader, has urged all CHS fans to
attend and bring a sack lunch. Cold
drinks will be sold by the yell
leaders.
Ags Working Hard
For UCLA Game
Paul Bryant’s 60-plus charges
are still sweating through their
twice-a-day workouts in prepara
tion for the opening game of the
season Sept. 16 against UCLA in
Los Angeles.
The A&M coach has indicated
that six of his brilliant array of
sophomores are likely to be start
ers against the national champs
of last year. These six are Bobby
Joe Conrad, Ed Dudley and John
Crow, backs; Guard Jim Stanley,
Cackle Charles Krueger and End
Bobby Marks.
Although these six have been
pointed out as “probables,” no one
can discount several of the other
members of last year’s freshman
team. Probably chief among these
is hard-running Kenny Hall, the
flashy fullback from Sugarland.
Because priority is now being giv
en to defense, Jack Pardee is beat
ing Hall out as the starting full
back.
The team will continue their
twice-a-day workouts until they
leave for California Sept. 15. One
of the sessions will be cut tomor
row because of the annual Press
Day. Bryant will have the team
woxk out the morning of the 15th
and will work them out that night
in the Coliseum in Los Angeles.
The Aggie football team is not
the only group around here that
is practicing for the UCLA game.
Che famed A&M band is doing
quite a bit itself, readying itself
for the chance to show off before
the expected 80,000 fans at the
game and the many thousands
more watching it on regional tele
vision.
A&M Garden Club

its first meeting of the year to

Center.
New members are invited to at-
ted, according to the president,
Mrs. C. C. Doak.
