Thursday, August 25, 1955 THE BATTALION Page 3 Cushing Memorial Library Has 250,000 Volumes Many students, old as well as new, njake the mistake of not be coming acquainted with A&M’s Cushing Memorial Library. Almost anything needed by any student can be found in the cen trally located library, directly be hind the Academic Building. And a little bit of research makes any class easier. During the past year the libi’ary has been air-conditioned and thor oughly renovated. It has been re painted throughout, and new, bet ter lighting has been installed. In addition, new furniture has been ordered for the reading rooms and the periodical lounge. On the first floor of.the library are the reserve and required read ing rooms, the newspaper lounge, and the periodical reading room and loan desk. The library has newspapers from all of the large Texas cities and a representative sample from the smaller towns. Some out-of-state newspapers are included too. In all, the library subscribes to over 50 papers. On the second floor is the main loan desk, over which books must be checked out from the general collection now numbering about 250,000 volumes. The public card catalog and display cases of new books can be found on this same floor. The reference room is just op posite the loan desk. Here are located the periodical indexes, en cyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, bibliographies, yearbooks and all other general reference materials. On the third floor are the order, cataloging and bindery depart ments and the Asbury browsing room, where all works of fiction are kept. The f room can be used for reading and study. The library operates on the clos ed-stack basis. This means that in order to get a book the student has to look it up in the card catalog, fill out a call slip, and present it at the main desk. He Hien waits while the desk attendant goes into the stacks and gets the book for him. The library is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Sat urday. On Sundays the library is open from 2 to 10 p.m. Books can be checked out for two weeks and renewed for two additional weeks. There are other libraries on the FSA (Continued from Page 1) to date, and publishing a monthly newspaper, called The Texas Ag gie, which contains news of the Association, the college, and the activities of the exes. He does his best to fulfill all requests which A&M men might make of the As sociation. The Student Loan Fund, under the administration of L. B. Locke, class of 1922, is another most worthwhile activity carried on by the Association. Few people ever hear about it except the boys who receive financial assistance. At present, there is a large sum on hand to lend to woi’thy students. In the last year, about $60,000 was loaned. The loss on unpaid loans is under one per cent. Perhaps the most important phase of the Association’s program is the Development Fund, which provides money for many worth while projects which are needed by the college but for which other funds are not available. Through the development fund, the former students have given to the college $234,000 in bonds for the construction of the Student Center; $50,000 for the Gold Star Fund, which aids in the education of children of A&M men killed in either World War II or the Korean campaign; $100,000 for the estab lishment of the Opportunity Awai’d scholarships; and $60,000 for the endowed scholarship trust fund. The latest project made possible by the Development Fund is the building of the all-faith chapel. About $200,000 dollars will be spent on its construction, which will be gin sometime in 1956. campus, the largest of which are tht following. The Texas Engineers Library was established in 1943 as a co operative project between A&M and the State Board of Registra tion for Professional Engineers. Late in 1952 the library was mov ed into its new building, which now houses about 30,000 volumes. The Veterinary Library, located in the Veterinary Building west of the main campus, is a specialized library primarily for vet students and faculty, but anyone has access to this library. The Architecture Library is lo cated on the foui-th floor of the Academic Building. It is another specialized library, for advanced students and faculty of the Archi tecture Department.
