/ Thursday, June 30, 1955 THE BATTALION Page 5 Game of Week Senators Blast Red Sox What had been a tight pitcher’s duel between the Red Sox’s Tommy Taylor and the Senator’s Jim Fow ler exploded into a lopsided vic tory for the Black’s Pharmacy Senators yesterday afternoon at Little League Park. The Senators broke loose for "iiine runs in the fifth inning, pull ing away from a tight 2 to 1 lead they had held up to that time. They picked up another run in the “ast inning to take a 12 to 1 game from the Red Sox. Backed by hefty hitting, and do ing quite a job in the hitting de partment himself, Fowler hand cuffed the V.F.W. Red Sox on two hits. Fowler lost his shutout through his own brief wildness, letting loose a wild pitch which allowed a runner to score from third base. That one time was about his only weakness, though, as he dealt out. only three walks ^nd struck out seven. The win gave him a 3 won, 2 lost record for the season. The last inning was pitched by another Senator regular, Johnnie Williams, who had played short stop during the first five innings. Fowler, centerfielder Joe Olian and third baseman Sydney Coufal all collected three hits apiece dur ing the game. Among them, they scored five runs and drove in five. Leftfielder Larry Lewis collected two hits for the Senators, scoring a run and driving in two. The Sen ators also picked up 14 walks, with James Riggs, first baseman, and Jim Mills, second baseman, getting three apiece. The Senators picked up a double by Coufal in the first, but no dam age was done in the scoi'ing led ger. The Red Sox leadoff man, shoxdstop Charles Gandy, walked, then Fowler struck out the next three men to end the inning. The Senators picked up a run in the second with two out. The Red Sox. pitcher walked four men in a row after two groundouts. Calvin Schehin was the runner scoring from third on the fourth walk, this one to Lewis. The Red Sox got one of their two hits in their half of the second as the first batter, center fielder Jack Fugate, singled. Fugate was forced out at second, and the next two batters made outs to end the in nings. The Senators got nothing in the third, as the Red Sox played heads up ball. A low throw on the first batter’s grounder to short was scooped up by first baseman Fred Wright, and the pitcher threw out a baserunner trying to steal sec ond while he wasn’t looking. The Red Sox went down in order. The Senators picked up a run in the fourth on Fowler’s single, an error, a stolen base, and a double steal. Fowler came home while Red Sox catcher Eldon Hag- ler was throwing out Riggs, who had walked. The Red Sox got their only run in the bottom half of the fourth. Taylor singled, and was forced at second by Wright, who BATTALION CLASSIFIED • WANT AD BATES One day per word Two days 3^ per word Three days Third day Free Four days 5£ per word * Five days 6^ per word Ten day 11^ per word Minimum charge—30^ DEADLINES 5 p.m. day before publication Classified Display 70^ per column inch each insertion PHONE 4-5324 For Sale 18-inch table model Admiral TV, late 1954 model with matching ta ble and antenna. Fu gate had an apparent hit to center field, but the centerfielder threw out the runner going to second, making Fugate’s effort a fielder’s choice. Hagler was hit by a pitch ed ball, and left fielder Andy Adams was safe on an error—fill ing the bases. Fugate scored when Fowler made a wild heave, but right fielder Bobby Medlen struck out to end the threat. The Senators made nine runs in the fifth, with Olian and Fowler both getting two hits each in the inning. All told, the Senators got six hits and six walks in the in ning. Olian scored twice during the Senator barrage. The Red Sox got one runner via the walk route, but no scoring occurred. In the sixth, the Senators got their last run. Mills walked, and went to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. Lewis struck out; catcher Jimbo Carroll grounded out, short to first, with Mills hold ing third; then Coufal singled, scoring Mills. Olian followed with a double, Coufal going to third, but Williams popped to second to end the White Sox half. Coming to bat in their last chance, the Red Sox picked up a walk to Wright, leading off. Fugate flied to cen ter; Wright stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. Weldon Umphress struck out, and Wright made the final out, being tagged as he tried to score on a pitch that got away from the catcher. The win gave the Senators a 3 won, 1 lost record for the second half. The Red Sox now have a 1 and 4 record. Then here’s just one of the many reasons why you should start going to church—N OW ! As an American, you like to come and go where you please, and when.' You like to speak what you please, and how. You like to pursue life, liberty, and happiness as you will. And in these United States you can—because we still have freedom. You can worship in what ever church you choose—or not at all. But this freedom of religion and all our other liberties should not be taken for granted. Throughout free countries, the Church is fighting the peril of com munism, lest individuals be strangled into hopeless, plodding submission. Freedom, then, is reason enough. Go to church! Support and uphold the Church—NOW! 'pi THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . . ALL FOR THE CHURCH The Church is the greatest fac tor on earth for the Building of character and good citizenship. It is a storehouse of spiritual values. Without a strong Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every person should attend services regularly and sup port the Church. They are: (I) For his own sake. (2) For his chiWren's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and ma terial support. Plajj to go to church regularly and read your Bible daily.
