Game of Week
Luther Gets No-Hitter
Young Mark Luther, star pitcher
for the Marion Pugh White Sox,
had quite a day for himself Tues
day afternoon at Little League
stadium.
The hard-throwing right-hander
chalked up a no-hit, no-run game
against the V. F. W. Red Sox—and
hit himself a home run as well.
The win was the fourth as
against no losses for Luther, and
the home run was his fifth, putting
him only one behind his teammate
Condy Pugh, the league’s home run
leader with six.
Luther’s home run came in the
third inning with one man on base.
The drive was a towering blast
that just dropped over the left
field fence. In fashioning his no
hitter, he struck out eight and
walked only two. His teammates
played good ball behind him, mak
ing only one eri-or.
The Red Sox were up and down
in the first. Coming to bat in the
bottom of the initial inning, leadoff
man Lane Coulter singled for the
first of three hits he collected Tues
day. Coulter, the shortstop, then
stole second base, and came home
on second baseman Danny Feld
man’s hit to right. Red Sox pitcher,
Eldon Hagler, then bore down, get
ting Cyril Burke to fly out, strik
ing out the dangerous Pugh, and
forcing Luther to ground out, se
cond to first.
The White Sox picked up two
runs in the second inning, when
after two walks sandwiched be
tween two strike outs. Coulter
drove in left fielder Jimbo Bevans
with his second hit, a single to left.
John Stark, the White Sox center
fielder who had walked, took third
on the throw to home from left
field, and then scored on a passed
ball. Feldman grounded out to end
the inning.
Coming to bat in the fourth lead
ing 5 to 0, the White Sox iced the
game with 7 runs. Coulter walked,
Feldman popped out to second base,
then Burke was safe on a error.

pop single to short left field, which
the left fielder could not quite
reach. With the bases loaded,
Luther hit a hard grounder in the
hole between, short and third. The
shortstop grabbed it and threw to
third, but thii’d baseman Tommy
Taylor dropped it, leaving one run
in and the bases still full. First
baseman Irvin Todd was safe on an
error, and Pugh came in on a wild
pitch. Bevans walked, and Harold
Cooner, who had taken over in
center in the fourth, singled in two
runs, going to second on the throw.
After an out, Coulter doubled in
Cooner with the final run of the
inning.
Going into the final inning,
David Bailey, pinch-hitting for the
Red Sox, sti-uck out. Gandy ground
ed to shox-tstop who threw the ball
over the first baseman’s head. A
wild pitch started Gandy toward
second, but the fast ball rebounded
off the back stop and the White
Sox catcher, Pugh, threw him out.
Howard was called out on strikes
to end the game and preserve
Luther’s no-hitter.
