The athletes started off early with a blazing 1:33.5 880-yard re lay as Ken Hall broke the tape 40 yards ahead of second place C in fantry. B athletics came back on the last event of the day to win the 440 relay in 43.7 seconds, three tenths of a second off their record breaking 43.4, set Friday in the preliminaries. The old 880 relay record of 1:35.0 was set in 1953 by squadron 24. Hall broke his own record of 10.1 in the 100-yard dash, breezing in with a 10.0 in front of squadron 24’s Ed Dudley, who had a 10.1. Dudley came back to erase his pre liminary 120-yard low hurdle rec ord with a terrific 13.9 and fin ished 12 yards ahead of A chemi cal’s Arlan Cornett. D infantry scored in six events to edge squadron 17, winners of both upperclassmen relays, 30-25. C infantry was third in the class B division with 14, and B field artillery scored 9 for fourth. Hall was freshmen high point man with 15 points, winning the 100, shot put and anchoring both relays. Huddleston won the class A 100 in 10.2, took second in the broad jump and ran third in the hurdles. Leggett’s John Smith scored 10, with wins in the 440 and the broad jump. The best race of the meet was the upperclassmen 440-yard relay. Squadron 17 barely edged B anti aircraft artillery, winning with 45.9 to the army team’s 46.0. Hugh Nanny led almost all the way in the class B 880-yard run, but couldn’t hold on in the home stretch and Jack Heald plunged past him 10 yards from the tape to win by three strides in 2:08.3. Huddleston, who had the best time in the upperclassmen hurdles, stayed with winner Sam Harris and runner-up Hugh West for the first three hurdles but couldn’t keep up the pace after his winning effort in the 100, which came just before the hurdles.
