AUSTIN, May 3—(/P)—Versatile
hurdler-sprinter Eddie Southern
of Dallas Sunset and a record
breaking mile relay team from
Baytown promise to grab the Class
AA spotlight Friday and Saturday
at the Interscholastic league track
meet.
Southern, a smooth-striding run
ner, has posted the state’s best
times in both hurdles and the 220-

yard dash to give him the inside

Baytown, holder of the national
high school mile relay record, rates
an odds-on favorite to repeat last
year’s victory and might possibly
set a new standard in the process.
Bobby Mosshart of Abilene, who
broke the state half-nnile mark last
week with a stunning 1:54.3 clock
ing, may get a chance to join the
parade of record-smashers.
The squat youngster turned in
his eye-opening performance the
first time he concentrated on his
specialty. He had always been too
busy anchoring the Abilene relay
teams to compete in the 880.
Southern, a master of all trades,
could probably win the 440-yard
dash if he decides to enter that
event, but the rules limit him to
three races. At the Texas Relays
he tied the state quarter-mile rec
ord of 48.9 seconds.

Iii Denton Meet
Aggies Will Need Depth
A&M’s depth in the distance
and field events will be badly need-*
ed at Denton tomorrow night to
get the Cadets past Abilene Christ
ian and North Texas State in
their triangular track meet.
ACC and the Eagles have out
standing sprinters and relay teams,
but are short on manpower in most
of the field events.
Thus Tom Bonorden, Herman
Johnson, Winton Thomas, Fritzie
Connally, Bill Cocke and Verlon
Westmoreland, key Aggie per
formers in the field and long run
ning events, carry much of the>
Maroon and White victory hopes.
Aggies Have Done 54-4
Bonorden has thrown 52-11’A
twice in competition (he was sec
ond with 52-14 at the Dallas in
vitational meet) and he and John
son have reached 54-4 in practice.
Connally is a consistent 6-4
high jumper and did 6-514 at the
Kansas Relays for third place.
NTS’ Kenneth Kelley did 6-6 to
win the event at the Texas Re
lays, however. Cocke and West
moreland figure to win the two-
mile and one-mile.
Morrow*Heads ACC
ACC’s tremendous Bobby Mor
row, whose 9.3 100 is the fastest
time turned in this year by a
small-college sprinter, heads the
Wildcat squad. He’ll be the fav
orite in the 100 and 220.
Morrow also anchors the 440 and
880 relay teams which won those
events at the Texas and Drake Re
lays. Morrow, Leondous Fry,
James Segrest and Don Conder
set a Drake 440-mark of 41.3:
Waymond Griggs replaced Fry on
the foursome which ran a 41.4 at
Austin, also a meet record.
The ACC 880-relay team did
1:26 for a Texas Relays mark and
ran a 1:26.1 in winning at the
Dx-Ake Relays.
NTS, with Jimmie Weavei', Jim
mie Huffman, Mike Hagler and
Paul, Patterson, won the Drake
mile relay in 3:15.6 and took the
event in 3:14.8 at the Austin meet.
The Eagles also won the mile
relay at the Border Olympics and
West Texas Relays.

home run lined to right field.
A hit batter, double steal, wild
pitch and three singles gave Allen
three imns in the fourth.
In the seventh, Ham and James
Smotherman 6ach drove in two
runs with a triple and single. A
