To Play Saturday

Paid Off Morgan
Puss Morgan likes to call his
career “From Coaldust to Star
dust,” because he worked in the
Pennsylvania coal mines while he
was saving his pennies to buy a
trombone.
When he finally got enough pen
nies together, he went all the way
and learned to play five other in
struments besides the trombone.
This talent, plus skill in direct
ing, organizing, and arranging,
adds up to his other catch-line,
“Music in the Morgan Manner,”
which will be featured here for the
Military ball weekend.
Mdrgan will play a concert in
Guion hall at 7:15 p.m. Saturday,
and will play at the Military ball
Saturday night, starting at 9 p.m.
Tickets to the concert are 75 cents,
and tickets to the dance are $2.50,
stag or couple.
The six instruments Morgan
plays are the trombone, piano,
celeste, marimba, vibraphone, and
organ. However, he doesn’t do all
the work. He brings with him a
full band of musicians and instru
ments, and a vocalist. But he sings
a few vocals too.
After he was graduated from the
Truesdale Mines, Morgan went to
work doing arrangements for John
Phillips Sousa, the march king, and
Victor Herbert, the musical comedy
king.
His field as an arranger was
wide—at one time he was doing
arrangements for both the Gold-
kette Swing band and the 102-
piece Detroit Symphony orchestra.
A minor claim to fame of his is
that he was musical director and
^ound effects man for the very
fii’st Lone Ranger radio program.
He was musical director of radio
station WXYZ in Detroit at the
time.
Since he organized his band,
Morgan has played hotel, night
club, and college dates throughout
the country, and has sold more
than 10 million recoi’ds.
Some of these records were songs
Morgan himself wrote—oh, yes, he
writes songs too — such as “So
Tired,” “So Long,” “Sweet Eloise,”
and “You’re Nobody Until Some
body Loves You.”
Morgan says he tries to give his
listeners and dancers alike “an in
timate style.” He describes the
style as one that is “apt to flow
right into your lap if you’re sitting
down, and massage your heels if
your dancing.”
And if you don’t want a mess of
music getting that personal with
you, you can always run. -

of experience on the entertainment

General Elections
Filings for general election will
open April 6. Positions to be
filled are as follows:
• Class of ’56 will elect 15 stu
dent senators, and a corps member
of the Student Publications board.
• Class of ’57 will elect 10 sen
ators.
® Class of ’58 will elect six
senators.
• Civilian students will elect
one senator from each dormitory,
one from College View, and two
day student senators.
Also, three civilian student rep
resentatives to the Student Life
committee, one civilian yell leader,
and one civilian member of Stu
dent Publications board will be
elected.
